About this deal

This is a mate to Arthur of Albion and a part of their series of chapter books, which contains the two books so far. The colours are heavily Mediterranean with greeny blues and blueish greens mixed with sand colours that darken to browns. At their next stop, several men scout ahead and encounter the sorceress Circe, who turns them all into pigs except one man lucky enough to escape.

I think this is suitable for independent readers from age 9 and upwards, but could be read to younger children. The illustrations are beautifully done and give it a fresh perspective for students who are learning myths. The authors have kept the violence of the original in place and while not inappropriately graphic at all it certainly is not for the squeamish as the cyclopes bashes a man's brains against a wall then pops him in his mouth, for example. This resources will encourage and support pupils to explore unknown vocabulary, classify tiered vocabulary independently, explore the wider application of newly acquired vocabulary and enhance classroom vocabulary display which ultimately leads to improved retention. Professional storytellers Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden bring you one of the world's greatest adventures stories!Ninth, Odysseus must choose between sailing by either Scylla, a six-headed monster, or Charybdis, a giant whirlpool. Odysseus has already thought of this, so the Greeks go to the pens and each tie three rams together.

They promise to give him safe passage to Ithaca, but first they beg to hear the story of his adventures. The pack even goes a step further by offering a selection of resources and activities at the end of the pack to support teachers in the classroom. After hearing this long account, the kind Phaeacians have pity on Odysseus and quickly prepare a ship to take him home.Athena also prepares him for a great journey to Pylos and Sparta, where the kings Nestor and Menelaus, Odysseus’s companions during the war, inform him that Odysseus is alive and trapped on Calypso’s island. This is a book which I will work on with my year 6 class for the next 5 weeks, as part of the Power of Reading literacy scheme. We picked this up from the library when we were reading Argos: The Story of Odysseus as Told by His Loyal Dog by Ralph Hardy to have the "original" story to read in a shortened format. The story is full of rich language and there will definitely be words that kids have not come across before so its a great chance for them to learn new vocab.

The next day, Penelope decides to hold a contest: whoever can string Odysseus’s gigantic bow and shoot an arrow through twelve rings can marry her. Encyclopaedia Britannica's editors oversee subject areas in which they have extensive knowledge, whether from years of experience gained by working on that content or via study for an advanced degree. After two days of swimming, Odysseus reaches the land of the Phaeacians and their kind king, Alcinoüs. A large and rowdy mob of suitors who have overrun Odysseus’s palace and pillaged his land continue to court his wife, Penelope. They are amazed to find that everything seems much larger than they are familiar with - including the sheep. It is full of adventure, intrigue and tensions, meaning that it will be exciting to analyse and to use to inspire independent writing. Once the Cyclops is asleep the crew think of killing him; but Odysseus explains that the rock which blocks the doorway is far too large for them to roll away themselves and that if they kill the Cyclops they will simply die a slow death, trapped in the cave. Greek King who is struggling to make his way home to his family at the end of the Trojan war, he instead finds himself on a ten year journey where he meets the cyclops, Poseidon, and the infamous sirens.

He and his crew first encountered the Lotus-Eaters, who eat the narcotic lotus flower and live in stupefied bliss. Before departing Hades, the Greeks talk with some of their old war comrades, including Achilles and Ajax. What line signals Odysseus flashback to the past where he beings telling the story of his adventures? The story is full of mythical gods and goddesses with super human powers, which I think girls will enjoy.

Odysseus spends the night describing the fantastic chain of events leading up to his arrival on Calypso’s island. Classical opinion was divided on whether he was an unscrupulous politician or a wise and honourable statesman.
