Despite taking various breaks throughout their career, the band have toured consistently and played popular music festivals, such as the Newmarket Nights festival in 2016 and the Forest Live festival in 2019. The controller of BBC 4, Richard Klein, revealed the decision making process behind getting Madness to play the event. “I can think of no better band than Madness to help celebrate a golden age of television coming out of the BBC's Television Centre, and I am really pleased that one of Britain's finest groups has agreed to come along and help BBC4 celebrate in fine style. Madness, as always, are one step beyond!" From 28 October 2002 to 16 August 2003, a musical based on Madness songs, Our House, ran at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Madness played a role in the executive production of the show, and Suggs played a role in the production for a period, playing the central character's father. [45] It won an Olivier Award for best new musical of 2003, [46] and the performance was released on DVD on 1 November 2004. [47] There was also a previous musical based on Madness songs, One Step Beyond!, written by Alan Gilbey. [48] [49] The musical had a brief run at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1993 [48] [49] and a run at Putney Arts Theatre, London in 2012.

Meanwhile, Madness rumbles on: in the new album, in the live shows, online. Even on Spotify, whose founder wasn’t born when Madness were at their peak, Our House has a quarter of a billion listens. It Must Be Love has become a wedding staple.a b "Madness Brit Award campaign". Archived from the original on 3 April 2008 . Retrieved 10 June 2007. a b c Clayden, Andy. Drummer Jon Farriss said: "Tonight is very likely to probably be the last show we ever do." A statement released also read: 'We understand that this must come as a blow to everybody, but all things must eventually come to an end. We're honoured to be the band the Beeb have chosen for this fond farewell.”
