About this deal

Bed guards and rails are aimed at toddlers, with the recommended age usually being from 18 months to 5 years. Many manufacturers advise not using a bed rail on a sleeping surface that is more than 60cm from the floor, so they wouldn’t be suitable for the top bed of a bunk. Please note that it is very important to ensure that the straps are correctly adjusted with respect to the minimum suggested size for mattress (width: 70 - 120 cm). If the straps are incorrectly adjusted the free length could exceed the specified maximum of 220 mm and cause danger to your child A cot canopy over the child’s bed is not just something that looks nice - it also makes the child feel at ease. If your child is a newborn, he or she will need to be shielded from light and disturbances, and a cot canopy can help the child shut out the rest of the world so that the baby bed becomes a calm, cosy and safe place to sleep. In the summer, a cot canopy can be great for children of all ages, as it also helps keep mosquitos and other insects away. A cot bumper is a really good helper if your child is turning and tossing at night, as it is a protective layer added to the inside of the bed which ensures that your child does not bump his or her head against the edges of the bed. Most cot bumpers are made of foam and have a soft cover over them, so your little one is well protected. You can find cot bumpers for both cribs and cots. A cot bumper can make your child feel extra secure, as it makes the bed a bit smaller and more cosy. You can also use a bed rail for the junior bed, which helps keep your child safe at night if he or she is still getting used to sleeping in a larger bed without hard edges. Although moving from a cot to a toddler bed is an exciting milestone, there is no reason to rush the transition unless your child is endangering themselves by trying to climb out of their cot. It's often better to keep them in their cot for as long as possible.

When choosing these toddler bed guards, we considered and compared protection, comfort, ease of assembly, convenience and portability. Baby expert Dean Smith also gave us some top tips to ensure that once you've bought a bed guard, you install and use it safely. He says:

Responsibility

AD – Disclaimer – we were given two Baby Dan wooden bed rails for the purpose of this review, but opinions, words and pictures are our own. I have also been paid for links it contains. First and foremost, it is important that you select a bed that matches the child’s age and size. The first bed your child will be sleeping in is a crib - you can choose a regular crib or a By-My-Side crib which can be placed right against your bed. If possible, put one side of your toddler's bed against the wall. This prevents the need to buy multiple bed guards, and offers a natural guard instead.

After a few months, the child will be about to outgrow the crib, and then you need to find a cot. A cot is a good investment, as your child can use it for a long time - you can also choose to use a cot right from the start when your child is born. If you like, you should also remember to use a Cuddle Nest or a cot bumper for the cot. So I wanted something stylish and sleek, that wouldn’t be cheapy-looking or babyish. The Baby Dan rails hit all the right spots. They’re made from furniture grade Poplar wood, and available in both natural and white. Both options can easily fit in with your child’s bedroom decor. I opted for natural so that the white didn’t clash with the cream furniture we already had. Because I’m a bit fussy like that! To prevent the risk of strangulation it is essential to ensure that when the bed guard is fitted correctly into position; there must be a gap of at least 25 cm (10 inch) between each end of the bed and the corresponding end of the bed guard No matter which bed you are about to buy, it is important that you also remember to buy a good mattress. When selecting a mattress, it is important that you know whether your child has asthma or allergies - if so, you must select a mattress made from natural materials, and you can find those here in the BabyDan online store. Though of course, all mattresses are free of all harmful substances.

Safety

Foldable Design: Need easy access to the bed? No problem! This bed guard can be effortlessly folded down, allowing you to reach the bed without any obstacles. They’re suitable for children aged 18 months to five years, and are 90cm long by 42cm high. So they provide ample protection for the child and are really sturdy. There’s no way they’re falling out of bed with this on. But there’s still enough room at either end (obviously depending on where you position it) for them to get in and out themselves. There are many different kinds of accessories that can make your child even more comfortable sleeping in his or her own bed. The accessories both increase safety and brighten up the child’s room. Place the bed guard half-way down the bed so that it sits in the middle. This guarantees the safest place, as it prevents your toddler from rolling out whilst sleeping at either end of the bed. Versatile Compatibility: Whether your bed has slatted or solid bases, this bed guard is compatible with all bed types, making it a versatile choice for any sleeping arrangement.

Make sure the bed guard is properly fitted. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and test its strength by pushing on the guard from inside the bed. If the bed guard falls or moves, it hasn't been safely fitted, and should be fixed before your toddler uses it.Foam mattresses are a great choice for children, as they are firm and take on the shape of the child’s body. It is also an advantage to select a mattress with removable bedding, particularly for children who often have little accidents at night. If the child tends to wet the bed often, a mattress protector is a good idea as is buying an extra top mattress. And of course, a good top mattress is an important factor in ensuring that your child sleeps well. Many DreamSafe mattresses have a sewn-on top mattress, but you can also buy top mattresses separately and use them on top of another mattress. Don't cover the bed guard in fabrics or clothing. This could make the bed guard dangerous, as it could prevent your child from being able to breathe when against the guard. Always make sure that the bed guard is completely breathable, and there's nothing preventing air from getting in and out. But one thing you DON’T want happening is them rolling out and hitting the floor. Moving twins from cot to bed was easier with Baby Dan It could go either way, they could settle well, or they could run for the hills. You can read about how my pair are getting on here.
