The Accident Book is an essential document for employers and employees, who are required by law to record and report details of specified work-related injuries and incidents. It’s more important that the details written in the accident book are accurate, rather than who fills it out. Ideally, someone with first-hand involvement in the accident would write the record. Please note that the law changed on 6 April 2012. If a worker sustains an occupational injury resulting from an accident, their injury should be reported if they are incapacitated for more than seven days. There is no longer a requirement to report occupational injuries that result in more than three days of incapacitation, but you must still keep a record of such injuries. Treatment of the injured person and cleaning up of the accident scene, however, should always take priority over filling out the accident book! It’s best to fill the accident book out when the events of the accident are still fresh in the minds of those involved. This way, important details won’t be left out. How severe is the injury – did the injured person fall unconscious/need to be resuscitated/be hospitalised?

If the injury sustained falls under a category of RIDDOR reportable injuries , you’ll need to fill out the accident book and submit a RIDDOR report as soon as possible.
