About this deal

Manual – Similar to a digital camera you can use this to capture events that occur in front of your vehicle whether or not it is in motion Scottish Islands - HS1-9, IV40-51, IV55-56, KA27-28, KW15-17, PA20, PA41-49, PA60-78, PH42-44, ZE1-3

Flexibility is a key feature here, as the F200 Pro can be bought on its own as a single, front-facing camera. Or, you can buy it with a rear-facing camera too (which is the kit we’re reviewing here), and there’s also the option to add a GPS antenna to the bundle. High-temperature protection system, the built-in thermal sensor will automatically turn off the F200 Pro to prevent overheating The app can be used to view a live feed from the camera, helping you position it just right, and the camera says aloud useful messages like “rear camera connected” to help with the setup process. The app is then used to view footage recorded by the camera (and the rear camera if you choose to install that too). Each file is named after the time and date it was recorded, and with a F or R to indicate whether it was shot by the front or rear camera. You don’t have to view and transfer footage this way, as popping the microSD card out works equally well. If you want to change any of the settings on the F200, you’ll first need to turn on its Wi-Fi and connect to it via your smartphone, and then load the Thinkware app. However, this doesn’t include a lot of extra options, other than being able to change the exposure for dark, middle and bright, independently for front and rear cameras. If you want to record external events in complete darkness, the final option is the BCH-600IRW. This infrared camera is waterproof and has a larger array of LEDs. This model is aimed at vehicles that don’t have rear windows, and since it will be exposed to the elements, it’s robustly constructed. It also comes with a longer cable than the other options. The F200 Pro’s compact design also helps it stand out, being considerably slimmer and more discreet than some of Thinkware’s other, larger dashcams. Both the front and rear cameras record in Full HD 1080p at 30 frames per second, and there’s integrated Wi-Fi for connecting to the Thinkware smartphone app, which is free for iOS and Android. The variety of rear camera options and ability to add a GPS antenna with safety camera warnings make the F200 a flexible choice for different kinds of dash cam user. Unfortunately, it’s let down by its mediocre core video performance. If the compression wasn’t so aggressive, image quality would be improved and the Thinkware F200 would be a better choice.

MicroSD cards up to 128GB are supported for recording video, although you probably won’t need one this large since recording loops to replace the oldest files once storage is full. A 16GB card would be enough for nearly 200 minutes of footage anyway, and this is what’s included in the box. Thinkware F200 – Mounting options Built-in Wi-Fi and free Thinkware Dash Cam Link App to control and manage the dash cam via iOS or Android smartphoneSafety Camera Alerts including speed camera, red light camera and mobile speed zones when connected to the optional GPS Antenna (GPSANT, sold separately) Scottish Highlands - AB36-38, AB55-56, FK17-21, IV1-39, IV52-54, IV63, KW1-14, PA21-40, PH19-26, PH30-41, PH49-50

Incident – Active Impact Monitoring System will automatically store the video data ten seconds prior to and after a collision registered by the 3-axis G-Sensor The F200 copes reasonably well with contrast and reproduces colours relatively accurately. However, high compression produces lots of artefacts, which have a negative impact on detail. This makes it quite hard to make out distinguishing features in the footage, such as any writing on vans or number plates. Dash cam manufacturers should really focus more attention on this area of their products, because it significantly reduces the usefulness of their offering. Why buy the Thinkware F200? Record your journeys in Full HD 1080p, saving them to the 16GB memory card (included, can be upgraded to 64GB) giving you a reliable witness in the event of an incident. The 140° wide-angle lens ensures you capture all the detail you need. Footage is recorded to a MicroSD card that can be removed and transferred to a PC or Mac using the memory card adaptor provided. No need to format the card manually as when the memory card is full old footage is automatically recorded over. The size and shape of the F200 Pro mean it should fit neatly ahead of most central rear-view mirrors. There’s no monitor for adjusting settings or viewing video, but we prefer this approach as it makes for a more compact and less distracting product. Instead, the rear only has buttons for Wi-Fi and manual recording. The daytime screen capture shown below was taken during a rather damp, though still bright day here in San Francisco. I mounted the camera on the dash this time for a more panoramic, street-level view. IDG One thing I couldn’t find in the app was any way to change the recording resolution or quality. So that specified 720p resolution option doesn’t appear to be available. Thinkware F200 – Optional extras
