About this deal

The Red Knights were a militant group organized in opposition to the Klan and responded violently to Klan provocations on several occasions. The Jewish Anti-Defamation League was formed in the early 20th century in response to attacks on Jewish Americans, including the lynching of Leo Frank in Atlanta, and to the Klan's campaign to prohibit private schools (which was chiefly aimed at Catholic parochial schools). Federal prosecutors used these laws as the basis for investigations and indictments in the 1964 murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner; [276] and the 1965 murder of Viola Liuzzo. Their primary targets are African Americans, Hispanics, Jews, [40] [41] [42] [43] [44] Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans, [45] Italian Americans, Irish Americans, and Catholics, as well as immigrants, leftists, homosexuals, [46] [47] [48] [49] Muslims, [50] [51] [52] atheists, [29] [30] [31] [32] and abortion providers. Klan chapters were closely allied with Democratic police, sheriffs, and other functionaries of local government.

While the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had paid informants in the Klan (for instance, in Birmingham in the early 1960s), its relations with local law enforcement agencies and the Klan were often ambiguous. In Indiana, KKK members directed more threats and economic blacklisting primarily against fellow white Protestants for transgressions of community moral standards, such as adultery, wife-beating, gambling and heavy drinking. William Wilkinson of the Invisible Empire, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, was revealed to have been working for the FBI. In January 1871, Pennsylvania Republican senator John Scott convened a congressional committee which took testimony from 52 witnesses about Klan atrocities, accumulating 12 volumes. The first Klan was established in the wake of the American Civil War and was a defining organization of the Reconstruction era. The FBI reported that Roy Davis's Original Knights was the largest faction and had about 1,500 members.

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in September 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama, which killed four African-American girls and injured 22 people. Rooted in local Protestant communities, it sought to maintain white supremacy, often took a pro- Prohibition and pro- compulsory public education [81] [82] [83] stance, and it opposed Jews, while also stressing its opposition to the alleged political power of the pope and the Catholic Church.Sales of the costumes provided the main financing for the national organization, while initiation fees funded local and state organizers.
