The Nokia X20 is a curious entry from HMD Global. It’s currently sitting at the top of the new portfolio, but it feels like a phone which has arrived twelve months too late. If the X20 in its current form had arrived in the second quarter of 2020 it would have sat proudly near the top of the recommended lists at this price point.
Alas, the phone’s night mode is a bit on the weak side, with major loss of detail when the darkness starts to creep in, and a fair old sprinkling of visual noise. Likewise, the 5MP ultrawide camera isn’t great, with the end result looking more like a watercolour painting – and not the type you’d like to hang on your wall, either. On another damp note, the Nokia X20’s screen is a bit inconsistent when it comes to colour accuracy. With an average Delta E of 3.69 in my tests, the phone’s IPS panel was all over the place, with oversaturated dark blue and green tones, and dull-looking reds. Capable of delivering charge and data, this is a multifunctional product that can work in a variety of situations for you. Charging is far less impressive though, at a measly 18W, which guarantees a several-hour charge time. That’s slow even for a phone at this price, where at least 30W is the norm and some phones go up to 50W or even 65W. A clearly noticeable heating up to 44.1 °C is present in the upper front area when the device is loaded for a longer time. This is tolerable in itself, but can become unpleasant on hot summer days.

The Nokia X20 is, unfortunately, the greatest ‘average smartphone’ in this market. And I don’t think that’s enough. Videos can be recorded in a maximum of 1080p with 60 fps. We would expect 4K video recording in this price range. So this isn’t quite a phone for mobile gamers, or people who’ll need lots of power for anything. But it’s not ideal for other users either, as scrolling through menus feels just a bit slower than on many other phones, thanks to irregular stutters and freezes.
