About this deal

Above all, don’t be afraid to be “wrong” or to sound stupid. The best thing to do is to just consider what jumps out most at you when you smell or taste a spirit. Once you’ve allowed yourself to do that, and got past the mental “I don’t know how to do this” barrier, you’ll find that it all comes naturally. It's true what they say about Benromach 10 100° that it's a gorgeous unique Speyside scotch, amongst the finest in any range age and price. Old Benromach 10 “Only ever matured in the finest oak casks, our signature TEN YEAR OLD single malt delivers delicate forest fruits and creamy malt, a touch of smoke and rich, lasting sherry notes.”– Benromach Benromach 10 Years Tasting Notes Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. Peated to 12-14ppm, so a little less than Highland Park, then matured in 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry and married for the tenth year in sherry casks. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate.

With the reopening of Benromach, Gordon & MacPhail wanted to try this classic approach. To do so, they use mostly medium-peated barley (12 ppm). And the result is, obviously, a lightly peated single malt. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. Mouth: quite smooth, with elegant smoke, oranges and herbal honey. Hints of eucalyptus and mint. Some crushed peppercorns. Plummy sweetness but also dried nuts and liquorice. Still this subtle dustiness – really nice.

side note: Dear whisky marketers, please stop saying you only use the finest oak, it means nothing. EVERYONE says they only use the finest oak casks and mathematically that just isn’t possible. This is an eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, ghost statement. Use your words to give us real, useful, info about the process. The only way “we only use the finest oak casks” would mean anything is if there were brands touting their use of only the most tired and worn-out 5th+ fill casks. That will never happen, so please. Bottled at a respectable 57% ABV non-chill filtered and non-colored this robust whisky is still friendly and accesible to anyone with patience yet it respects the purist, the spirit and the traditions too. Even though we usually identify peated whiskies with Islay, not so long ago there was a bit of peat smoke in lots of whiskies, including Speyside. That is why it isn’t so strange to find a slightly smoky touch in Johnnie Walker, the best-selling blended scotch. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying.Crafted from “the finest oak casks” of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry, this release doesn’t seem to have the additional sherry finish that it previously had. The old ‘Romach 10 was a marriage of 80% ex-Bourbon and 20% ex-Sherry casks that spent 12 months finishing in ex-Oloroso casks. What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over. A beautifully balanced combination of bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks with a slightly peated spirit.

Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv. The Benromach 10 100° holds its own against many other older more expensive whiskies, this punches well above its weight. Tasting notes are a pretty arcane, nebulous business – so much of it is completely personal – and no one starts off with a big vocabulary of them. Like anything else, it’s just a case of tasting lots of whiskies, and maybe just thinking of one or two elements that stand out most strongly in each one. Enter Benromach 10, which I grabbed in December, whilst in search of a New Year’s Eve bottle that wouldn’t bore me to sleep before midnight. Owned by the excellent independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is a small distillery in Forres which purports to make Speyside whisky ‘the old fashioned way’. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.
