About this deal

The wallpaper in this place is going to do me in,” she quipped an hour into her shift that Monday. “I can see my obituary now: ‘The Honorable Lily Baines, petty officer in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, twenty-two, dead of mid-Victorian chintz.’” While Matt’s more frank and frequently profane dialog, along with the desperation of his own internal monologue, gives the reader or listener a clear portrait of who he is and what drove him to become the person – and the officer – that he is on the brink of what could be – briefly – his very own war.

The year is 1943, when petty officer Lily Baines manages to tune into a radio transmission she has been trained to intercept and decode for the navy. Whilst this information is vital to the war effort, there is one revelation that makes this intelligence startling. It is from the future!!!. Escape Rating A++: Signal Moon is short and absolutely perfect in its length. It represents a very brief moment in time and needed to reflect that brevity. Also, it’s just so damn bittersweet – and appropriate in that bitter sweetness, that more would be just too much to take. The experiment also proved that LoRa technology, used for many IoT (Internet of Things) applications, can cover such great distances and that it is possible to send and receive low-powered messages from the Moon. This could become relevant for future lunar communications. Pistols for propulsion? It would bump you 10 inches… and the CO2 tank would get one of the crew a few hundred yards away. Fun, but futile. You are a member of a space crew originally scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. Due to mechanical difficulties, however, your ship was forced to land at a spot some 200 miles from the rendezvous point. During the crash landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available must be chosen for the trip. Below are listed the 15 items left intact and undamaged after landing. Your task is to rank them in terms of their importance in allowing your crew to reach the rendezvous point. Moonbounce or EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) communication presents some of the most significant technical and operating challenges in amateur radio. Since the first two-way amateur QSO via the moon took place in 1960 it has since been followed by many others on every amateur band from 28MHz to 47GHz (with trials now underway at 77GHz).

A novella available from Kindle Prime. Kate Quinn has written well-researched and informative books of historical fiction based on real people and events. This one is a stretch where she enters the realm of fantasy, and it works! Lily is from a titled English family and has set aside her life as a debutante. It is 1943, and she works at one of the Y stations scattered through the country. The task is intercepting coded enemy communications and sending them to Bletchley Park for decoding. She worries about the outcome of WW2 and whether her friends will survive on the battlefield. Will the allies be defeated by enemy forces, and does her work have any value?Signal Moon”, by Kate Quinn is a bit of a science fiction story involving physics and multi-dimensions. Also, not a genre I gravitate to. Author Kate Quinn is the draw. She is one of my favorite historical fiction authors. In the early days amateur EME stations needed huge antenna systems, very high power transmitters and complex receiving set-ups. Today EME operation is within reach of most amateurs with a reasonable VHF station capability and enables long distance VHF/Microwave QSOs between many countries across the globe. If you’re looking for something with a supernatural twist, Signal Moon is a must. It’s got everything Quinn brings to her stories. We have the 1940s woman who wants to do her thing for her country. She isn’t willing to let anyone die, and that includes a man she doesn’t know in 2023. For the first time ever, I kept putting myself in each of their (Lily’s and Matt’s) places and wondered how I would have reacted. This happens to me while reading full-length novels but never during a short story. I love how it dragged me into its action, thereby increasing the impact.
