About this deal

The camera has a 16-megapixel sensor, allowing it to capture sharp and vibrant images. It also has image stabilization technology, which helps in reducing blur and ensuring clear and steady shots, even when shooting handheld or in low light conditions.

Video is of the Full HD variety rather than the now more commonplace 4K, but that’s always been acceptably the standard at this entry level. Effective stills resolution here is a quoted 16.76 megapixels from a bog standard 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, and, with maximum lens aperture being f/3.9, it’s no surprise the automatic flash fires when taking shots indoors, even in daylight. We can however turn it off ourselves if it gets annoying. While there is no optical image stabilization to prevent the effects of hand wobble and camera shake resulting in blurred images built in, we do get digital anti-shake. The top plate shutter release button is sufficiently large that no one would miss it, even underwater, while located alongside it, albeit smaller to prevent the two from getting mixed up, is the on/off control. The Kodak PixPro AZ528 offers a 52x optical zoom and a 4x digital zoom, allowing users to get closer to their subjects from a distance. The lens has a minimum focal length of 24 millimeters and a maximum focal length of 1248 millimeters. It has a minimum aperture number of 2.8 and a maximum aperture number of 5.6, making it suitable for different photography styles and scenarios. Additionally, it has a video recording feature that can capture full HD (1080p) videos at 30 frames per second. Although there is a ridged ring located around the lens barrel, which one might expect may provide an alternative means of adjusting the focal length, or manually focusing, this is just for show, as it’s fixed solidly in place and doesn’t rotate. What can be manually activated here, however, is the pop-up flash that sits directly above the lens, the hood for which also houses stereo microphones. We also get a program, aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual modes alongside auto, for any photographer who does want to get a little more hands-on. At maximum wide angle setting, we’re getting converging verticals, and, on a bright day, isolated instances of lens flare, but neither of these are overly distracting. Slightly more serious is that there is a noticeable fall-off in terms of sharpness into the corners of the frame, but busier subject matter will distract from this. Similarly, brighter conditions result in burnt-out highlights and images are generally softer towards the telephoto end of the zoom, even with the digital zoom function disabled. at the extreme 42x telephoto zoom setting, from the same shooting position. With the majority of camera manufacturers now focusing on much higher priced and more sophisticated interchangeable lens cameras of interest to the photo enthusiast, perhaps the best we can say is that the casual photographer who has otherwise been left to their smartphone now has a user-friendly alternative. As mentioned, to our chagrin there is no eye-level electronic or optical viewfinder provided on the AZ425, so images are both composed and reviewed via its 460K-dot resolution LCD screen. Three inches in size, this is fixed rather than being angle-adjustable. While some flexibility as regards the screen would have been preferable in the absence of an EVF, in fairness this would have both pushed up the price and the bulk of the unit. As one might expect, as this model is distinctly old school in whatever charm is has, the screen provided isn’t sensitive to our touch either. The top plate of this Kodak features an equally familiar shooting mode dial, which is slightly loose without being off-putting-ly so, next to which is an on/off slider switch. We find the obvious raised shutter release button located at the top of the camera’s handgrip meanwhile, encircled via a lever for ergonomically adjusting the zoom. Everything here feels intuitive, with controls and adjustment levers falling readily to hand – which is just what we want. This allows us to completely – and literally – focus on whatever subject is in front of our lens, rather than being distracted by the workings and operation of the AZ425 itself. Anyone using this camera for the first time shouldn’t find operation daunting. Performance

Lens aside, at the heart of the camera is a 21.14 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor that delivers 20.68 effective megapixel images at the AZ425’s highest selectable JPEG setting and in standard 4:3 aspect ratio. This is probably as high a resolution as we’d want from a sensor as small as 1/2.3-inch, and even so is at the upper edge of what’s sensible. We suspect this is why the maximum light sensitivity setting is a modest ISO3200 on this camera, to limit the appearance of image noise. A built in flash of the pop up variety is provided above the lens should we wish for further illumination. The Kodak Pixpro AZ425 offers the convenience and creative flexibility of a giant lens on a compact, retro-styled body and at an affordable price. With compact camera sales having fallen off a cliff these past few years as smartphones took over, is there enough interest to make cameras like this worthwhile?
