The Baltic Sea Cycle and Iron Curtain Trails are part of the renowned EuroVelo cycling routes, which incorporate some of the best long distance bike rides across Europe. The EuroVelo routes connect Europe by bike through a network of long distance routes and are perfect for testing the legs over multiple days. For cyclists, it offers a classic Tour de France-style challenge with tough climbs, invigorating descents and relatively smooth roads. La Farola starts 124 miles (200km) east of Santiago de Cuba and is thus best incorporated into a wider Cuban cycling excursion. You could also charter a taxi to drop you off at the start point. So yes, go to witness the world’s biggest bike race set off, but stay to experience cycling that’s truly integrated into a city.
Welcome, then, to the gravel version. Gravel Epic is organised by the same folks who, for 2022, have two events, in Marrakech (31 March to 2 April) and Switzerland (23 to 25 September). The terrain between the three countries is relatively flat, and though you may have to venture onto some busy roads and up a few hills, there are also large stretches where it’ll likely just be you, the bikes and the ocean.This popular cycling route typically traces long stretches of the famous Danube. Many people choose to start in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the home of inescapable Sound of Music Tours, before heading to cycle paths alongside the waters on the way to Linz. A particular highlight is the teal water of Lake Attersee — the largest freshwater lake in the country. There’s an otherworldly pace to many of the regions that you’ll pass through on this trip, which will contrast starkly with the beautiful bustling cities of Budapest, Prague and Krakow. The scenery along the way also varies dramatically, from the beautiful Danube, right through to the tough slopes of the Low Tatras.
