About this deal

Plymouth is now on both its third corporate owner and its third bottle design since I started in this business (see above), and it’s added a wonderful sloe gin and, most recently, a Navy Strength version of the original. But what’s inside seems not to have fundamentally changed throughout all of this. Both the original and the Navy Strength are reviewed below, as they stand as of early 2013. We have all heard about the rum rations in the navy. Unknown to a lot of people is the fact that, while the enlisted men subsisted on rum, Royal Navy officers drank gin.

He stirs New York Distilling’s Perry’s Tot with Noilly Prat or Dolin Extra Dry vermouth, and garnishes it with a lemon twist. It’s a bracingly strong, gin lover’s Martini. 5 Navy Strength Gins To Try Fords Gin Officers’ Reserve A lovely nose with an unusual earthy melange of angelica and juniper, with subtle camphoraceous tinges of cardamom and coriander. It’s softly juniper forward. Others have written before that Plymouth Gin’s credibility as a style unto itself stem from this unusual earthy nose. To me it the nose suggests that angelica is almost as much of a key component of the botanical blend as is juniper.

Regarding Travis McGee and Plymouth versus Boodles gin, Travis explains his dissatisfaction with Plymouth in Book #16, The Dreadful Lemon Sky (1974): I think it makes a gentle Gin and Tonic. Delicious, but subtle. I find that the juniper and citrus come through more strongly with a little bit of effervescence. A. Naturally, double you, double you, double you, Plymouth Gin dot com.[ http://www.plymouthgin.com] A. Martinis, its a little too much. I’d cut it with 1/3 water, or make it a two to one part gin to vermouth. Which although technically closer to the official ratio. Most people just don’t drink their martinis that way. The way most people do martinis I’d be hesitant to endorse it. Its just too much, and its going to get you really drunk really fast. We are talking a full 30% more proof than usual. But to each their own. It still tastes good. Just might be a bit too intense. Plymouth Gin was the only spirit made in England, and one of only three gins in the world, that carried a geographical indication (GI) designation with the European Union, certifying its traditional origin. In 2015, the distillery's owners declined to pursue renewal of the GI, considering its protection was unneeded. [5] This leaves only Gin de Mahón from Spain and Vilniaus Džinas (Vilnius gin) from Lithuania to carry GI status. [6] Product [ edit ]

The verdict: Navy strength gins

From 1784 until 1970 — nearly the entire duration of the rum ration — a spirits merchant called ED&F Man & Co. held the exclusive contract to supply the Navy with rum. The product they supplied was blended according to a recipe which unfortunately has never been revealed to the public, but it certainly included some traditional, heavy, pot-distilled rums from Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad [Ed. note: predictably, three British colonial possessions in the Caribbean] as well as some lighter rum to make it more drinkable. It was probably aged, though I’d guess for not more than a few years, and was colored very dark with caramel. a b c d e Rusch, Robin D. (12 February 2001). "Brand features - profile: Plymouth Gin". When Plymouth reintroduced a 57% bottling in 1993, Murphy supplied them with a term which neatly summarized the historical reasons for choosing this strength: “navy strength.” This made for much more appealing branding than the cumbersome designation “100º UK.” The term has since spread to a few other bottlings of gin and at least one rum. Portobello Road also recently launched its own navy strength gin (though it is currently unavailable in the U.S.). Four Pillars, New York Distilling Co., and Colorado’s Leopold Brothers also debuted navy strength gins.

There is no doubt that the Royal British Navy has played a key role in both the production, consumption, and prevalence of gin. The use of exotic spices in gin was made possible by imports from Africa and Asia. Gin’s prevalence around the world is due to sailors setting foot in new cities and on new continents.
