Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend was a seminal moment when I read it the first time, but I would say the same of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather and Roald Dahl’s The BFG. When you know you’ve written the best book you’re capable of, and people still don’t like it – that can take some getting used to.

I did speak to many commercial divers, and some of the old guard from the marine police consulted me informally. The actual marketing activity consisted of a handful of tweets, and Dive didn’t feature in newsletters or front-facing online activity.The two form an unlikely partnership in uncovering a particularly nasty case involving drowned girls and drugs. While I’ve had nice responses in reviews on GoodReads and Netgalley, I’ve also had blank stares and muted reactions. It’s been one of the highlights of my journey so far to meet authors online and in person – because the authors I’ve met are genuinely lovely people. A tense and interesting thriller, I genuinely enjoyed the twists and turns in this well-executed novel. If the publishing industry were forthcoming about what really goes on behind closed doors, no-one would ever pursue writing novels in the traditional way. Focusing all of the action in and around the Thames also felt like unexplored territory in crime fiction. The emotional burden is one to be engaged with and recognised, or you risk believing, that your reasonable reactions to unreasonable situations are somehow wrong. Agents should pitch to the right publishers for the manuscript in question, and you put your faith in their knowledge of the market. In fact, it was refreshing to find myself feeling more educated, as the book literally dives into the murky depths of the hidden riverways under the City of London.
