About this deal

Be part of this ancient tradition, which has taken place every night for at least 700 years in the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. In both world wars, the London Underground network provided much needed shelter from the horrors of air raids. Arbella Stuart, the cousin of Elizabeth I who starved while under arrest for marrying without royal permission, is said to frequent the Queen’s House still.

During the First World War, around 18,000 women took on roles in London’s transport companies, helping keep the city moving. Ten significant engineering wonders of London’s transport history and the problems they solved, some more successfully than others! The first, a major argument between Adam and Edmond in Adam's home was breathtaking in its intensity; while the second, an astoundingly moving scene between Tony, Parminda and Sarjit ended with a tiny comedic touch that was profoundly warming. B. Priestley, Jean Rhys, Graham Greene, Muriel Spark, Maeve Binchy, Doris Lessing, Hanif Kureishi and Shena Mackay.

They were originally part of the Yeomen of the Guard, the monarch’s personal bodyguard who travelled with him.

The busy man and woman of to-day may have the inclination but has rarely the time to give to this enthralling subject the attention it deserves. Discover the quirky hidden history of three former stations that formed the most remote and easterly portion of the London Underground network. One unscrupulous minister by the name of Mr Howse charged a mere 15 shillings for a burial at his chapel near the Strand (less than half what others were advertising), then horrifyingly stuffed as many as 500 corpses in a year under the floorboards. This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests. Something about a side-street being described as a little 'cut-throaty' in 1912 literature had me in bits. During the Second World War, Plessey defence electronics company built a secret factory in newly constructed Underground tunnels at the eastern end of the Central line.

They also transformed the Tower into England’s largest and strongest ‘concentric’ castle (with one ring of defences inside another). And when the gates are locked and all the visitors have gone, the Tower embraces a thriving community within its walls.

James Woodards, known as Jim, was a 28-year old bus driver with the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC) when the First World War broke out in August 1914. In each case their portrayals were solid, rounded and very well studied so that their characters became very much alive. And at the end is a telling exhibition: a collection of objects that are important to the storytellers. Over the last year the participants have made nine films about people who live, work and study in east London.
