About this deal

The Ranger and the Lander (12:20) - The design and construction of the Ranger spacecraft and the Lander spacecraft with another walk-through from production designer Nathan Crowley. Final Thoughts– Just that. The cast and crew give us their impressions on the film as a whole and its possible repercussions on the real-world. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar would be impressive in the ranks of contemporary hard science fiction films, even if for no other reasons than that there are so few of them these days and that its ambition is nearly unsurpassed.

The Simulation of Zero-G—Discover the various methods that the filmmakers used to create a zero gravity environment. Christopher Nolan films often appear crafted for demo purposes, with fantastic visuals and jaw-dropping IMAX sequences that demand to be shown off. Yet they’ve almost universally been peppered – not plagued, mind you – with minor issues that tend to leave them always running just shy of perfect. Interstellar, though not an exception, is so predominately stunning that the scattered anomalies are little more than passing space dust in the vastness of its otherwise spectacular universe. Celestial Landmarks– An explanation as to some of the scientific facts that influenced the story as well as a brief lesson on astrology. Across All Dimensions and Time—A look at the concept and design of the Tesseract, which incorporated a practical set rather than a green screen. Across All Dimensions and Time– A pretty comprehensive look at the design and thought that went into the Tesseract that played a major part in the third act of the film.Plotting an Interstellar Journey– The filmmakers and some members of the cast look at the project ahead of them. How it will be filmed, some of the IMAX footage within as well as some of the logistics of the project as a whole. This three disc set contains two of the discs, each containing a movie (the Ultra HD on one and the Blu-ray on the other). The special features are all found on the third disc. Life on Cooper's Farm (09:43) - The story of the lengths the filmmakers went to to create a corn working outside Calgary in Canada, including building a farm house for exterior and interior photography and growing 500 acres of corn.

Inside Interstellar– The rest of the segments are all found housed under this umbrella. Totaling just over two hours, these 14 featureless explain pretty much all you’d need to know about the film. Here’s what to expect from each: The Endurance– A look at the spaceship in the film, its resemblance to the International Space Station and a tour of the inside (which looks conspicuously like another we’ve seen before…) TARS and CASE (09:27) - A detailed look at the two intelligent mobile machines in the film, how they were designed and brought to life for the film. The conclusions that are reached can appear hokey on the surface. There's an "I've seen this somewhere else," vibe near the end. But, with Nolan's keen directorial eye, focused on the wonder of practical special effects, and a dominating performance from McConaughey, 'Interstellar' overcomes most of its faults and satisfies in the end.

The disc includes a great set of extras that reveal all that went into making such an ambitious film.

Miniatures in Space– We’re shown the use of miniatures in the film with respect to the scale and so on.The Simulation of Zero-G (05:31) - How the filmmakers created the illusion of weightlessness using many techniques that were originally pioneered on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Next up is the 14-part Inside Interstellar documentary, which offers 122 minutes worth of behind-the-scenes material on the film’s production. There’s no “play all” option – you simply select each individual featurette from the disc’s menus. Segments include: Plotting an Interstellar Journey (7:49), Life on Cooper’s Farm (9:43), The Dust (2:38), Tars and Case (9:27), The Cosmic Sounds of Interstellar (13:40), The Space Suits(4:31), The Endurance (9:24), Shooting in Iceland: Miller’s Planet/Mann’s Planet (12:42), The Ranger and the Lander (12:20), Miniatures in Space (5:29), The Simulation of Zero-G (5:31), Celestial Landmarks(13:22), Across All Dimensions and Time (9:02), and Final Thoughts (6:02). Among the highlights are abundant material on the filmmakers’ approach to the production, good looks at the conceptual design and construction of the film’s various spacecraft and equipment, discussion of the film’s groundbreaking depictions of astrophysical phenomena, and lots of on-set interviews and footage with the cast and crew shot during filming. You even get to spend time with Zimmer as he carefully crafts his score, then records it in the midst of an English cathedral. While I personally found the sheer loudness of Zimmer's score to be irritating in the theater, I found that my home viewing experience was much better. The scenes in question – like when the team ventures through the worm hole – are still really loud, but the dialogue is still intelligible. I actually quite liked the engulfing, entrancing quality of Zimmer's score this time around. I also immensely enjoyed the heaps of bass thundering forth from my sub. If you're a fan of low-end sonics, then this is surely the sound mix for you.

Interstellar (2014) - Blu-ray Interstellar (2014) - Blu-ray

Shooting in Iceland: Miller’s Planet/Mann’s Planet– The two planets in the film share a common Earth-Bound country in Iceland. The shallow lake that was used as well as the barren glacier that was perfect for both locales. The Cosmic Sounds of Interstellar (13:40) - Hans Zimmer discusses how he wrote and recorded the score for the film. Plot: What’s it about? Video: How’s it look? Audio: How’s it sound? Supplements: What are the extras? The Bottom Line Plot: What’s it about?

Interstellar Blu-ray Extras

TARS and CASE—Designing and building these unique characters and how they were brought to life on set and in the film. The Science of Interstellar– This 50 minute documentary is narrated by McConaughey (much more understandable here than in a majority of the film, I might add) and takes us through a lot of the literal science that’s included in the film. Together with Physicist Kip Thorne who also served as the film’s Executive Producer, we learn some of the logistics in the film, the creative licenses (not) taken and get a crash course in Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. It’s a stunning video presentation which, for the majority of the runtime, will make your jaw drop. The Space Suits– Nothing too mind-blowing here, just a look at the space suits, how they really don’t differ too much from those used today as well as the practical fit for the actors. The Dust—Learn how cast and crew avoided sand blindness, and see how to create, and clean up after, a catastrophic dust storm.
