New collection of Jim Starlin’s time writing Batman overlaps with “A Death in the Family” collection below. The Joker. Batman's greatest foe. His goal is chaos, but the beauty of his madness is the incredible amount of thought he puts into each caper. In the Killing Joke, the Clown Prince of Crime decides he wants to prove that, given the right push, anyone would fall into madness. To go about this, he torments down-to-earth Jim Gordon. All the while, we're given glimpses into the Joker's origin and see what pushed him over the edge. The first volume is the biggest highlight. It includes Loeb's writing and a wider team of creatives who capture the best of both worlds when it comes to tone. Whether it's through colorful buddy team-ups or wild multiversal capers, the Superman/Batman collections are choice reads for fans who love seeing Batman and Superman work as allies. But the true obstacle for this new Batman comes in the form of James Gordon Jr., the Commissioner’s psychotic murderer of a son and modern day classic villain. Thanks to him, the tale is steeped in horror and full of deftly executed twists, not to mention the mystery he is responsible for is one that even Bruce would have had trouble with. 8. Batman: Year 100Standard caveat: This has not been solicited by DC yet, so nothing is official until it’s official. Even then, things can change. Just keep coming to 13th Dimension for updates.

Long before True Blood, the vampire craze hit comics thanks to the almost abstract art of Kelley Jones and the heavy inks of Malcolm Jones III. Batman's ears never stood so tall before. In another artist's hands, Red Rain might read like a farce. But this is an example of the perfect marriage between story and art. 6. Batman: Son of the Demon The Sandman #38–75; "The Castle" from Vertigo Jam #1; "The Flowers of Romance" from Vertigo: Winter's Edge #1; "How They Met Themselves" from Vertigo: Winter's Edge #3My Greatest Adventure #80–85; Doom Patrol #86–121; The Brave and the Bold #65; Challengers of the Unknown #48 Collects: Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Batman and Robin #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Red Robin #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Batgirl #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Outsiders #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Catwoman #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Oracle #1, Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Commissioner Gordon #1, and Bruce Wayne: The Road Home – Ra’s al Ghul #1. You really don’t need to read Infinite Crisis as part of a Batman guide. I list it here primarily because it’s the mid-way point for the entire DC Universe in the 2000’s, and because Gotham Central, Book 4 features an Infinite Crisis tie-in. You can read the entire Infinite Crisis guide on Comic Book Herald Here! Mythology starts a new run on Detective Comics by Peter Tomasi which will continue to the end of Rebirth. Collects: Batman: No Man’s Land #0, Batman #573, Detective Comics #740, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #126, Batman #574, Detective Comics #741, and Batman: Shadow of the Bat #94

DC's grim arbiter of justice, the Spectre, returned in the 1960s to enact bloody vengeance on evildoers across the DC Universe. The volume roughly covers mid-1956 to mid-1958, which means if sales keep the series going, it will take a few editions before we hit 1964 and the New Look. ( That’s the stuff.) The New 52 brand-wide reboot was controversial overall, but it served Batman incredibly well. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo helmed one of the most consistently high-quality runs on the character in recent years, and their entire run is collected in two omnibus books. Paul Dini and Bruce Timm caught lightning in a bottle with The Animated Series. Given that success, it was expectedly adapted in the comic space as The Batman Adventures.Detective Comics #27–56; Batman #1–7; New York World's Fair Comics #2; World's Best Comics #1; World's Finest Comics #2–3 A mad bomber with a centuries old grudge is out to level Gotham city. This story delves into the history of the city and how that history has impacted the entire globe. A few looks at a few DC Comics bigger books scheduled towards the end of the year – and into the following one. An early glimpse at Ed Brubaker’s skills as a crime novelist. Bruce Wayne is discovered with the body of a wealthy heiress in his arms,, and now the entire Bat family must work to secure his freedom. It’s a story right out of any dimestore novel which is why it’s absolutely perfect for the Dark Knight. I have HC 2 and 3 and then everything in single issues (but I would buy an absolute Zero year in a heartbeat).
