About this deal

The Shimano BL-MT501/MT502 brakes may cost half the price of some more premium hydraulic mountain bike brakes, but this doesn’t stop them from performing remarkably well. The brakes had a spongier feel than others, but this could be down to the extra length and flex at the lever. This might not seem ideal, but it does allow you to feather speed when you’re going fast. The second cohort is targeted at cross-country and downcountry riders, who still need plenty of stopping power without upsetting the scales. These two- and four-piston brakes grab onto 180mm and 160mm rotors in our testing, fitted to our downcountry test rig.

Long 2,000mm hoses should provide enough length for the largest of bikes and these attach to the calipers at fixed points. The lever’s hinged clamp is compatible with Hope’s Tech 3 mounts, so Shimano and SRAM shifters can be attached. The carbon fibre lever blade also has reach adjustment accessed with an Allen key, but doesn’t have bite adjustment like some other high-end XC brakes. Description: Clarks Clout Hydraulic Disc Brake + RotorThis top-quality disc brake is perfect for all-mountain riders who like to push the pace and need a reliable model with top-notch stopping power. It features a robust alloy lever construction which provides excellent toughness on the most aggressive trails. Giving you superior braking modulation, consistency and feel, this Clout version offers a wide range of riders the dependability they need to perform at their best when out on the trails.Adjustable MTB Disc BrakeEasy to set-up and maintain, Clarks has gone the extra mile by equipping this version with lever reach adjustment. This means you’ll benefit from being able to customise the distance from your handlebar to the lever to suit your riding style, disciple and preferences. This is a perfect choice of upgrade for riders who want higher-end braking performance from an affordable disc brake. The SLX M7120 might not have the same functions as Shimano’s pricier brakes, notably Free Stroke adjustment, but we didn’t miss this a great deal in testing. The brake has two pistons housed in a CNC-machined caliper. They have a classic Hope feel with less bite than Shimano and less power build-up than SRAM. Price, as you would imagine, is the most popular reason for someone buying one product over another. It is the single most important factor in choosing the majority of products we buy. The same goes for Brakes. The front caliper provides the high braking power and modulation you need for top-level performance, while having fewer pistons on the rear caliper helps save weight. The two pistons on the rear caliper are oversized, so there’s still a good chunk of stopping power. Shimano’s mid-priced SLX brakes offer almost as much performance as their pricier siblings. Here, the longer, two-finger lever might come into play. It’s something I tend to avoid because having more fingers wrapped around the bar is preferable, but at least there’s the option, when you really need extra strength. Overall, we found the G2 Ultimate offers a lovely lever action, and while it has ample power it doesn’t have quite as much as the best brakes. This might make the premium price tag hard to justify for some, but it might also point to just how good SRAM Code brakes and others truly are. The brake lever itself is long – Clarks claiming that it’s a ‘two-finger’ lever. There’s a pronounced up-turn at the end of the lever to keep your finger (or fingers) in place, while gentle dimples on the lever blade add grip.Despite a low overall cost, the M4’s lever is far from feature-free. The clamp is hinged, enabling easy fitting to the handlebar. It might not be quite as refined in feel as more expensive brakes’ clamps, but it’s far easier than a band-on type clamp to use. The first thing is material. Looking at what Clarks Clout Hydraulic Disc Brake + Rotor is made of will give you a really good idea of the quality overall. Take a look at the specs above and you should be able to see the material. It’s then up to you to decide if it meets your expectation.

Some brakes come with four pistons in the caliper and others with two pistons. Four pistons offer more braking power but can increase weight. That’s why you can see it was easy for us to give Clarks Clout Hydraulic Disc Brake + Rotor such a high overall score of 9.3 / 10. It seems to have the perfect combination of features, quality and price making it a great all-rounder.

Pull harder, and you do eventually reach the brake’s maximum output. It shouldn’t be a surprise that it doesn’t hit the higher echelons of my group test in the power stakes.
