For performance testing, we connect a NAS appliance to the main mesh unit via Ethernet, and then wirelessly connect to the mesh network from a laptop equipped with an Intel Wi-Fi 6E network card, with support for 2×2 MIMO. We take this laptop to various rooms in the home, copy a series of files to and from the NAS system, and measure read and write speeds to discover the peak performance the mesh system is able to deliver, at different ranges and via different access points.

Other things we liked about the system include the fact that there are four Gigabit Ethernet ports on each unit and that these are located on the rear rather than on the base of the units, making them easier to access. There are basic parental controls here, too, however we didn’t like the way the web interface was laid out. The Deco X20 is a dual-band system supporting 2×2 MIMO, which helps to keep the costs down, but since WiFi 6 is designed to share bandwidth more efficiently across multiple connections, this shouldn’t be a huge problem. These satellites are a little taller than previous Deco satellites, but they’re still small enough to place out of the way (110 mm × 110 x 114mm).

All three satellites are identical, although you have to choose one as the main device. This must be connected to your internet modem via an Ethernet connection, although if you don’t want to (or can’t) replace your existing router, you can plug the first Deco into your router instead. If you don’t replace your router, you should disable your existing Wi-Fi. The Deco X60 has a four-stream 5GHz network running at a maximum of 2404Mbps (600.5Mbps a stream), but the 2.4GHz network is much slower with two 287Mbps streams (574Mbps in total). Even so, across all devices, that gives you a total of 18 streams to play with.

You can pay a huge amount for a Wi-Fi 6E mesh, but TP-Link’s Deco XE75 brings you 6GHz wireless networking for little more than many regular Wi-Fi 6 systems. It’s also cheaper than the other systems I’ve reviewed, showing Wi-Fi 6 prices are starting to drop.
