About this deal

No, but I’ve noticed it appearing on letters. I went to Royal Ascot last month and it was on my invite. These are strange times indeed. For a joke, some friends bought me some headed notepaper that says: “From the desk of Frank Skinner MBE”.

There are many ways for those in the public eye to bare their souls, some raw, some cringeworthy, and some where you fear for their sanity. But publishing a prayer book is arguably in a different league, especially when you are Frank Skinner, the best-known face of the Nineties’ “lad mag” generation.

He can’t quite remember why he agreed to do the book but, as he points out, it hasn’t come quite out of the blue. “When I was doing interviews 25 years ago, I would talk about how I read poetry and had two English degrees, and that I was a Roman Catholic, but it never made it into print.”

Comedy is supposed to be difficult. Otherwise there’d be all sorts of losers doing it! I enjoy the challenge of navigating through the landmines. Besides, it’s not like I’m desperate to go up there and lay into various minorities. I don’t do that in my normal life. Why should I on stage? God is a tough audience as far as audible response is concerned, but I love that I don’t have to explain the references He even makes a joke about it, which seems oddly sour and uncomfortable when it happens but to the comedian’s credit, he keeps it all in and doesn’t edit. That’s honesty. Frank Skinner to host Room 101 on BBC One". BBC Media Centre. 5 January 2012 . Retrieved 28 October 2014. Still, he thinks it’s important that people get out there and talk about religion in the way they talk about other aspects of life. “One of the things religion has suffered from is being spoken of in grave terms constantly. I take it seriously, obviously, but I don’t take it seriously, if you know what I mean.” I used to dream about [drinking] probably three nights a week. But funnily enough, since I’ve had a kid, those dreams have faded awayRaised Roman Catholic, Skinner reconnected with the faith in his 20s, and remains a practising Roman Catholic. He is also a supporter of West Bromwich Albion, and regularly attends games. [39] Though Skinner also talks about being a practising Catholic who daily reads the Bible, there is nothing pious in the tone. Instead, he often raises a laugh – a first for any prayer book, in my experience.

Whitworth, Damian (21 August 2018). "What's wrong with 100 units a week? Adrian Chiles on life as a middle‑class drinker"– via www.thetimes.co.uk. I do wonder what all the fuss is about,” he says, dismissing the idea that modern comedians have their free speech stifled. “I don’t think there’s ever been a time when you could just say anything.” He recalls an early comedy show – this must have been in the late 80s – where the host apologised to the crowd after Skinner had performed some risque sexual material. “He said I’d never play at the venue again – and then he launched into a load of racist material and brought the house down. Everyone’s got their own standards and restraints. But I think it’s been good for me to keep questioning what I say. It’s made me think more.” I’m guessing he means Capaldi?” Skinner ponders, looking at me for confirmation. Then his expression changes. “I hope it’s not William Hartnell!” The actor who played the First Doctor, after all, would be 114 by now. Frank Skinner's 'prayer book' is on my bookshelf alongside '10 Second Sermons' (Darton, Longman & Todd), written by fellow comedian Milton Jones in 2011. Again, the comedian's quirky view on life brings fresh insights and challenges. Archived copy". Archived from the original on 22 April 2016 . The book was written in 2001, perhaps this shows a change in the times. These kinds of comments could have been okay then but had I have known the way Frank talks in the book, about women, about himself and how he bullied his way through childhood I would have not bought the book. New Year Honours 2023: Brian May and Lionesses on list". BBC News. 30 December 2022 . Retrieved 30 December 2022. I think it’s more acceptable,” he says, not entirely convincingly. “I do still feel a slight tension sometimes when I bring it up. I can feel it in the air.”

He laughs at the idea. “I probably should have those big career thoughts, shouldn’t I? It actually came about by accident, but it’s ended up being the biggest labour of love job I’ve done.” Frank’s domestic footballing heart is in The Albion, the one of West Bromwich, where he is from. This is an important factor. He shares the same school of thought as I when it comes to football, and is the very reason I never got into it. That supporters should be from wherever they were born and/or lived for a considerable amount of time when they were young, (ergo) Man Utd supporters who live in Adelaide, for example. I fully believe in this and that’s why I never became a football supporter. That, and my local team was crap. Expelled from school at 16, Frank held various jobs, later going on to gain an MA in English Literature. Nurturing a serious drinking problem from the age of 14, Frank eventually turned to Catholicism in 1987 and hasn't had a drink since. Keh, Andrew (7 July 2018). "England Takes Another Step Toward Bringing 'It' Home". The New York Times . Retrieved 9 July 2018.Drink, he suggests, had changed his personality. “In a way, I achieved a white heat of happiness in drink that I have never achieved in sobriety. I was quite a solitary child and, as a drunken adult, I was extremely gregarious. And then when I stopped drinking, I steadily retreated into myself.” Is there a place for comedy in prayer? If there’s a place for comedy in life, there’s a place for comedy in prayer. God is a tough audience as far as audible response is concerned, but I love that I don’t have to explain the references. He describes his prayer life as "a telepathic dip into a long, ongoing conversation with thousands of tabs left open and no helpful 'new readers start here' summaries or simplifications for the neutral observer." For most of my life, I was an old man in waiting, so I feel at home now. Some people are born to be younger – they have an incredible teenage time but spend the rest of their life lamenting its loss. Whereas I feel my time has only just arrived.
