Clay particles are very small but, because this allows more particles to fitin any givenspace (say 1cm cubed), they have huge surface areathat dominates the physical properties of soil. I’ve seen some negative feedback about this only being good as bird seed, and I’ll agree that the birds certainly took a liking to it, but that could be the case with any grass seed, and you have to make sure that you’re doing things to keep the winged raiders from eating it. Light shade doesn’t seem to be a problem for most perennial ryegrass cultivars, but they definitely thrive better in the sun. Where this seed sort of falls a bit short is in shaded areas, and we saw a noticeable difference in how well the grass grew in the light compared to the patches in shadow. The seeds germinate quickly, with initial shoots appearing in days, but growth rate is slow and you’ll need to be very vigilant about weeds.

This isn’t exactly surprising, but something to keep in mind if you have a lot of shaded spots in your garden. Our Wet Soils Grass Seed is formulated to be used in areas that are prone to the occasional flood or seasonal waterlogging.

Obviously, we have chosen mostly very tough mixes that can handle a little bit of punishment, but also tried to find ones that will give you that lovely looking lawn that you’re after, all year round.

Expect a thicker, greener and healthier lawn, while killing weeds and moss if you follow instructions step by step. The lawn naturally gets more stressed as the weather warms up, so keeping it at a healthy height by mowing consistently will help to keep it stay strong and of course green. Although not really a lover of being cut too short, this grass can be trimmed down to around an inch or slightly lower without causing any damage to the turf. If the temperatures are below 5 degrees, you will have to wait a bit longer until you see germination, and depending on circumstances this could be a month or even more. And as I showed you above the finished lawn after I tried to push a bit of a stripe in the lawn with my manual push mower: Lawn after 4-5 months of care from seed When is the best time to plant grass seed?

Whether your lawn is non-existent and you’re looking to establish a new one, or you want to give a little boost to the grass you already have, this Grass Lawn Seed is suitable for either purpose. As a result, the overallsurface area of sand and silt is smaller andso much less influential on determining the characteristics of a soil than the clay particles.

Applying a liquid feed every 4 weeks, will not only help the soil but will also help the lawn turn greener in colour by making the grass blades more healthy. Choosing the right time to sow, anytime between March and October, can make all the difference; this is probably the most important part of preparation when it comes to these particular seeds. kg bag covers 102 m² when spread sparingly, but don’t expect it to go as far if you’re reseeding an area – it also might be necessary to go over patches more than once, depending on conditions and how well the seed takes. This kind of soil doesn’t hold moisture or nutrients like clay soil does, and so you’ll need grass seed that is drought tolerant and I wouldn’t mind recommending looking at the GBW grass seed.

Browntop Bent isn’t as commonly found in hardwearing grass seed mixes, but it can make be included because it helps make lawns fine and soft. It’s important to note that clay soil can take longer to warm up in the spring, so you may want to wait until the soil temperature is at least 50°F before planting your grass seed. Adding organic material to your soil can also help reduce the amount of water your lawn requires, as it helps the soil retain moisture for longer periods. If the patches aren’t too big or bald, try 30g, if your lawn looks like an ancient patchwork quilt, go for 40-50g. When selecting a grass seed mixture you are going to have to choose based on many other factors such as the amount of sunlight your lawn receives, the amount of foot traffic it will endure, and any specific climate conditions in your area. Now, just because a seed mix is advertised as good for pets, that doesn’t mean that you can let them walk over the area once it’s seeded, and you’ll have to wait for it to grow before your pets can lay there.
