About this deal

These two cameras take a markedly different approach in terms of their design and control layout, with the A6700 following the long-established rangefinder-esque format of the A6000-series cameras and fewer manual controls than the XT5. movies can be recorded internally at 30P in 4:2:2 10-bit color. X-T5 features the 4K HQ mode, which uses 6.2K over-sampling to produce high-quality video, while making the maximum advantage of the high-resolution sensor to deliver video in superior image resolution.

Color rendition looks entirely natural and very pleasing in the standard setting, equating to Provia/standard film simulation. (Image credit: Tom's Guide)

Conclusion

The X-H series has become the true flagship, debuting new technologies with the least restrictions and aimed at those who demand the fastest speed and greatest video capabilities. The X-T5 features the special Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode, which combines 20 separate images to create a single 160 megapixel RAW file for the ultimate quality when detail really matters. The X-T5 comes with 19 Film Simulation modes, including “Nostalgic Neg.,” characterized by high saturation and soft tonality. Users can use Film Simulation presets, designed for various subject types and scenes, as if they are choosing photographic film. The new A6700 has 759 phase-detection points and 25 contrast points that cover 93% of the frame, with the system working all the way down to -3EV low-light. The image sensor is one of the big differences between the A6700 and the X-T5, and a good reason why you should choose one over the other.

The X-T5 features Auto White Balance based on the Deep Learning technology. AI technology has boosted the camera’s ability to automatically determine white balance, e.g. by way of accurately recognizing warm light-bulb color. The X-T5's face/eye detection mode works reliably, though performance is distinctly lens dependent. Out of camera JPEG shot using the Provia/Standard profile (pre-production sample). WiFi connection can be made over IEEE802.11a/b/g/n/ac (standard wireless protocol) and Bluetooth Ver. 4.2 (Bluetooth low energy) is also available. X-T5 colour and kit options Fujifilm's 40MP BSI chip, used in both the X-T5 and X-H2, adds very little read noise translating to flexible Raw files with plenty of dynamic range for editing. If you need the resolution, and have the right support equipment and scene, multi-shot delivers its promise of excessive resolution. File sizes are huge too, though, each sequence requires 20 Raw pictures and outputs a 700MB DNG. The interface also has a quirk where it defaults to the upper end of its auto ISO range, so it's worthwhile to set ISO manually when using multi-shot.

Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body. Whether you’re new to the system or a seasoned X shooter the number of X mount lenses ensures you’ll never run out of creative options for any type of content creation. This includes the simultaneously released Fujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM WR Macro Lens, which follows the recently released next generation XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR lens. You’ll also discover a huge range of third party options from leading designers such as Samyang, Tamron and Sigma to name a few. Connectivity and accessories As well as humans and animals, the A6700 also has the ability to recognise airplanes, cars, trains and insects. The design of the Fujifilm X-T5 definitely marks it out as more of a hobbyist camera than a pro workhorse. If you like deep grips, then you'll want to look elsewhere (at the X-H series, for example). But it also offers a perfectly-evolved control system that's been refined in a few places. Fujifilm has been smart in clearly segmenting their X Series ranges. The XH cameras are their flagship range in terms of build quality, feature set and overall performance. If you shoot action or nature or if you are a videographer and prefer a slightly larger body, then the XH2s is the one for you. For Stills and Video with a high resolution sensor then it’s the XH2. But if you shoot Travel or Landscape where size and weight are important factors and don’t need the XH features then the XT series is the way to go. For Street photographers it’s the rangefinder style XPro, XE or X100 ranges.

Proven Focus With an Inelegant Interface

As with previous X-T models it features dedicated dials for shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation. There's also a pair of command dials, front and rear, which can have some of those functions assigned to them. Both command dials can be pressed inward to act as function buttons or to change the dial's function. The A6700 is rated for up to 5 stops of compensation. Sony claim that the A6700 has an updated algorithm that provides more precise control and detection down to the single pixel level, but we're not sure at this point what material effect that has on the resulting images. At first glance the X-T5 body looks a lot like the X-T4, with an almost identical control layout from the front, top and rear, but place them side by side and you’ll notice the 5 is a little shorter and narrower, albeit still not quite as slim as the older X-T3. The latest X-H2 and X-H2S have now taken the pressure from the X-T series to be all things to all people, and allowed the X-T5 to return to its roots as a photo-oriented camera.

You might be wondering why you'd buy the Fujifilm X-T5 over the X-H2 – as they both share the same sensor and processor. What’s the difference? There's a major ergonomic difference between the two cameras, as the X-H2 has a mode dial while the X-T5 has a shutter dial. Styled like a classic film camera, the X-T5 is aimed squarely at stills photographers. Image credit: Andy Westlake The X-T5 can also shoot video, but its specifications aren't as ambitious as those of the expressly hybrid X-H2. So there's no 8K capture and its 6.2K footage is taken from a 1.22x cropped region of the sensor, not the full width as in the X-H2. Similarly, the X-T5's 'HQ' 4K footage is derived from this 6.2K crop, not an 8K readout. Like the X-H2, the X-T5 can capture 4K at up to 60p from the full width of its sensor, but not using all the available pixels. Despite the lower price, Canon's EOS R7 runs the X-T5 pretty close in spec terms, with a faster burst rate, decent video specs and a sensor only 7MP behind. Its autofocus is also very good in stills mode. The X-T5 offers a more analog shooting experience, a larger, higher-res viewfinder and our favorite rear screen arrangement for stills shooting. The Fujifilm also has access to a far more comprehensive system of lenses designed with APS-C in mind, which further enhances its credentials for enthusiast photographers.

Like other recent Fujifilm models, the X-T5 offers a slate of subject-specific AF recognition modes, including classic face/eye detection as well as animal, bird, automobile, airplane, and train spotting. Of these, face/eye and animal detection proved incredibly handy for a city-dwelling mid-30-year-old with a mid-to-small dog and somewhat camera-shy friends, providing a satisfactory hit rate in all but the dimmest lighting conditions. As Fujifilm’s technologies improved though, the X-T evolved to become more adept at fast action, sports and wildlife photography, as well as growing into a very capable tool for video, and in turn the body gradually beefed-up to better-handle bigger lenses while also acquiring a side-hinged screen. The X-T5 features the 5-axis in-body image stabilisation of up to 7.0 stops. Users can shoot hand-held even in low light conditions such as nightscape photography. The IBIS mechanism is also used to shift the camera’s image sensor in high precision to facilitate the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function.
