About this deal

Bete Noire (1987). OK, some of the 80s crummy production techniques is starting to creep in here, although Bryan is complimented by many of the better musicians of the time including Johnny Marr of the Smiths. Ironically sounds more dated than either Avalon or Boys and Girls. Still, 2/3rds of this record is great, although this is the very first hint we get of Bryan's vocals starting to fade a bit. Well worth seeking out, and by far the hardest to find remaster. 7.0 out of 10. Boys and Girls (1985). With Roxy Music having given its final bow with the masterpiece Avalon in 1982, here is Bryan's long-awaited sequel, produced masterfully again by Rhett Davies, mixed by Bob Clearmountain. This album is less well known than Avalon but is every ounce its equal. This is a marvel of modern recording and mixing technology, and Ludwig's remaster gives you the most of it. Impossible to resist, this album will take you away to a different world, you'll love it if you have a romantic bone in your body. A true demo disc to show off your system. 9.5 out of 10, 10 being Avalon. Kent, David (1993). Australian Chart Book 1970–1992 (illustrateded.). St Ives, N.S.W.: Australian Chart Book. p.111. ISBN 0-646-11917-6. OK, I'm a big fan, especially of Roxy Music, so I went out and bought every single Bryan Ferry solo remaster from 2000, all done expertly well by the great Bob Ludwig, in HDCD if you have a compatible player. If you are a Roxy fan (and how could you not be), Bryan's solo albums have so much to offer, they should not be overlooked, they in many ways meet that impossibly high standard set by his main band. You have to chase these albums down if you are in the USA, they are UK imports. I can't see how anyone could be disappointed by these remasters, or the Ludwig-remastered Roxy Music HDCDs from 1999. It's hard to believe how good these sound, just awesome. So here's one fan's evaluation of these albums: The Village Voice 's Robert Christgau wrote in his review of In Your Mind: "Ferry has custom-designed a new line of songs for his solo concept, rather than borrowing from early Roxy or his humble forebears, and especially on side one the stuff is appealingly down-to-earth." [2] In 1992's The Rolling Stone Album Guide, Mark Coleman said that " In Your Mind strives for the windswept, bracing impact of Roxy Music's classic Siren. The surfeit of Ferry's compositions is gratifying, though even the hookiest (' Tokyo Joe,' 'Party Doll') merely restate Roxy's familiar romantic and musical themes." [4]

As Ferry's first solo all-original LP effort, released after Ferry's band Roxy Music went on a four-year hiatus, it was supported by an extensive tour. Released on elpee and cassette in March 1977* in the UK (Polydor, 2302 055), the US and Canada (Atlantic, SD/CS 18216), Australia, New Zealand and Europe (Polydor, 2310 502/3100 355), Germany (Polydor, 2344 060), Japan (Polydor, MPF-1054) and in 1978 in Yugoslavia (RTB, LP5674/LK 57276) with lyric inner sleeve or insert. Reached #5 on the UK charts and #126 on the US charts. (*First appeared in 3/12/77 issue of Billboard.) The Bride Stripped Bare (1978). A mixture of originals and covers, a little "spotty" in places but another solid album, a bit under-rated in some quarters. 7.0 out of 10. Another Time Another Place (1974). Another covers album, and a perfect extension of These Foolish Things. Another mix of the modern with the older, complimented by Bryan's ever-improving buttery floaty bird-like croon. 7.5 out of 10. Bryan Ferry with Dyan Birch, Doreen Chanter, Helen Chappelle, Frankie Collins, Mel Collins (horn arrangements), Ray Cooper, Martin Drover, Preston Hayward, Neil Hubbard, Phil Manazanera, Paddie McHugh, Chris Mercer (horn arrangements), Ann Odell (string arrangements), Morris Pert, John Porter, David Skinner, Chris Spedding, Jacquie Sullivan, Paul Thompson, John Wetton. Produced by Bryan Ferry and Steve Nye; engineered by Steve Nye. Special thanks to Geoff Haslam, Bill Price, John Punter, Chris Thomas. The Pictures

As Time Goes By (1999). An all-covers album composed of standards from before the 40s. Bryan's voice is now showing very clear signs of age and ruination. Still, around half of this album is essential, another worthy entry in his cannon. 6.5 out of 10. His musical ambitions were brought into sharper focus after he hitch-hiked to London to see Otis Redding perform in concert in 1967. It was then that Ferry knew he had to become a singer. Only their names are mentioned, whilst their instruments and the exact songs on which they play are not. The following list merely tentatively mentions the instruments the same musicians have played on other Ferry records. In 1983, Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ frontman Kevin Rowland managed to get his band booted off their prestigious support gig on David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight tour. Dexy’s were riding high as a ragamuffin band of “Celtic soul rebels” who had scored big with their single “Come on Eileen.” Despite the plum role on Bowie’s show-bill, Rowland was no fan of the Thin White Duke. Unfortunately, he made his antipathy public during one gig at the Hippodrome d’Auteuil, Paris, when he told the audience David Bowie was “full of shit,” before adding: Taxi (1993). A relatively dashed-off sounding albums of covers, will remind the listener of his earliest works, much more simple and less produced than his more recent work. His voice is holding up but fraying at the edges. Still a strong effort. 7.0 out of 10. Coleman, Mark (1992). "Bryan Ferry". In DeCurtis, Anthony; Henke, James; George-Warren, Holly (eds.).
