Trevor Charles Horn CBE (born 15 July 1949) is an English record producer and musician. His influence on pop and electronic music in the 1980s was such that he has been called "the man who invented the eighties". [1] [2]On 22 March 2011, he performed at the Roundhouse, London with Trevor Horn and Producers, along with Spandau Ballet and Alison Moyet to raise funds for a music charity for underprivileged children. The event raised over half a million pounds on the night. By the late 1970s, Horn had a sideline helping other musicians write songs and arrange demos, eventually forming The Buggles with keyboard player Geoff Downes. Powered by a new Prophet-5 synthesiser owned by their friend (and future Oscar-winning film composer) Hans Zimmer, their debut single, Video Killed the Radio Star, reached number one in 1979 and propelled Horn onto a new path, aged 30. She said, “I’ve just set fire to Dolph’s clothes.” This was the Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren, who was her boyfriend at the time. “Well, this’ll get you out of it. You can come down and sing,” I said. She finally agreed to come on the Sunday. Chris Welch (2009). Close to the Edge: The Story of Yes. Omnibus Press. p.261. ISBN 9780857120427 . Retrieved 21 January 2018. Downes has also worked with Asia on a 30th Anniversary album, XXX, released in 2012. Downes co-composed 7 of the 9 original compositions on the album with Wetton, and the remaining two with Wetton and Howe.

In 1978, Horn and Downes formed the new wave band the Buggles with early contributions from Woolley. They secured a recording deal with Island Records and spent much of 1979 recording their debut album, The Age of Plastic (1980). The credits list Horn with co-production, lead vocals, guitar and bass. [ citation needed]

Testimonials

In 2006, Downes reunited with the original members of Asia for a series of tours that continued into 2008, releasing a new album of studio material, Phoenix (2008), with more shows performed through Spring 2009. Later in 2009, the original Asia toured the US supporting Yes, with him and guitarist Steve Howe doing double duty performing with both bands nightly. In 2006, Horn co-formed the supergroup the Producers, with the singer Lol Creme, the producer Steve Lipson, the drummer Ash Soan and the singer-songwriter Chris Braide. They performed their first gig at the Camden Barfly in November 2006. They continue to perform, now under the name the Trevor Horn Band. Downes has been married three times and divorced twice. He has two daughters, Christina and Alexandra (died 2013), from his first wife, Norwegian former model Wenche Steen [ no], who was Miss Norway in 1973.

In fact, Horn’s name is so synonymous with huge chart success, it’s easy to overlook what a peculiar route he took to fame. He began his career in the early 70s as a bassist with the Ray McVay orchestra, best known as the house band on TV’s Come Dancing. “It was the best-paid gig around,” he shrugs, before correcting himself: “Well, the best paid shit gig around. We played anything that was a hit, so it was a good grounding in what makes a good pop record.” I first met Grace Jones at a studio just off Queensway in London. She was smaller than I expected but somehow seemed to grow larger as I got to know her, purely through the force of her personality. She threw herself into the recording with enormous gusto, marching around the place, but I wasn’t keen on the end result – it sounded a bit like one of those aerobic workout tapes that were popular at the time.Horn has his own home studio these days, albeit a little bigger than most, occupying the ground floor of a double-fronted, Georgian townhouse in north London. Some of his four adult children share his home, and there are bicycles and muddy boots, signs of messy family life, dotted amongst instruments and equipment. By then he was dating Sinclair, who ran the influential Sarm studios in east London, and suggested his talents might lie in production. Together they formed ZTT Records and revolutionised 1980s pop. The time and money spent making hit records in that era seems wildly indulgent from a modern perspective, with Horn and a trusted crew often spending months and tens of thousands of pounds working and reworking a song. “We put in a lot of effort to try to get things just right,” he says. “Not perfect. ‘Perfect’ is a stupid word. But it had to have the right emotional impact.” It’s been very difficult, and we’re still dealing with it in different ways, but the family stayed together,” he says.
