About this deal

It breaks down the TV’s picture performance into three parts: micro dimming, motion control and upscaling. The use of an IPS panel offers decent colours at wider angles – handy for anyone watching off-centre, but blacks aren’t blacks, especially with the lights off, described with a milkiness when I moved off-axis. It won’t make you duck down in your seat and you’ll never feel a rumble with the on-screen explosions, but we’re pleased with what Toshiba and Onkyo have done here.

Good-quality native 4K sources, especially 4K Blu-rays, look much richer in texture, clarity and depth than HD images do, despite the 50-inch screen being fairly small by today’s 4K standards.

The premise is similar to Dolby Atmos in that it creates a hemisphere of sound that’s more lifelike and natural in its presentation. The 50UK3163DB’s claimed contrast ratio of 5,000:1 is reasonably promising by affordable LED TV standards, though the set’s measured peak brightness (taken on a white HDR window covering 10% of the screen) of 336 nits doesn’t promise a particularly exciting HDR performance. The 50UK3163DB’s remote is similarly big and chunky - but that’s not actually a bad thing given that it allows it to carry large, spaciously laid out buttons that fall easily to hand even in a dark room.

The night-time scenes are packed with deep, moody blacks, while daytime scenes take advantage of vibrant yellows, oranges and greens. The menu pops up from the bottom, so you can continue to watch content as you move through the five tabs. The 55UL5A63DB’s speakers are tuned by Onkyo, but the UL5A misses out on the “Enhanced” speakers of the UL7A and the front-firing efforts of the TL7A. If you have purchased a universal remote, it should come with an instruction guide as to how to pair the remote with the TV. Other connections include an optical out, LAN, satellite and aerial antenna, two USBs and, interestingly, VGA and component connections.Contrast between the whites and blacks is noticeable when the Toshiba is presented with the harsh light and shadows of a scene in a boxing ring scene as characters find their faces half illuminated and half plunged into darkness.

We close our eyes and there’s a definite sense of the direction of travel as Captain Marvel flies about smashing through Kree spacecraft. As far as ports go, the WK3C includes a CI slot, headphone jack, USB and HDMI on the side of the TV and a Composite Video In input, satellite, antenna, Digital Audio Out (optic), Ethernet, VGA and two more HDMI ports on the back.

The bottom edge has an extra 10mm of chrome-look brushed metal that blends nicely with the rectangular plinth just a short distance below. We start our viewing with a disc of Captain Marvel in 4K HDR, but as soon as the screen turns black we hit problems. USB Record is available on certain Toshiba models – check the Specification section of the relevant model for further information. A shot of the sky showed some definition, while other shots had a grey tinge in the corners of the screen. It is a simple and clean-looking display that would look great in spaces like bedrooms or smaller apartments. However, the built-in Alexa support for the UK31 isn't quite as polished as in more premium TVs, the voice assistant often reacting even when we haven't said ‘Hey Alexa’. It lacks bass, which isn’t unexpected – but its lack of bass is exacerbated by turning up the volume.
