For classical composer John Dowland, teardrops open the soul

Church of Happyology: "The Turning Wheel" included a religion whose messiah was known as The Bard Elron Hu. At no point is he ever referred to as Elron Hu, Bard. This is a particularly early reference, as it was originally published just a few years after Dianetics. If I ever get the time I could draw a spectrum for PKD writing. On one end would be realism, populated mainly by his later books and his mainstream work. On the other end would be the absurdist stories that are more caricature than real, those works that revel in weirdness and that demonstrate his great imagination but told with a wink and a nod.

But from the halfway point, I more or less read without stopping, as if moved by centrifugal force. A drug such as KR-3 breaks down the brain's ability to exclude one unit of space out of another. So here versus there is lost as the brain tries to handle perception. It can't tell if an object has gone away or if it's still there. When this occurs the brain can no longer exclude alternative spatial vectors. It opens up the entire range of spatial variation. The brain can no longer tell which objects exist and which are only latent, unspatial possibilities. So as a result, competing spatial corridors are opened, into which the garbled percept system enters, and a whole new universe appears to the brain to be in the process of creation. Ma soffrire: significa morire ed essere vivo nello stesso tempo. L’esperienza più assoluta più soverchiante che puoi provare.” Now, scifi fans are frequently a tolerant bunch. Among them are fans that will tolerate abysmal writing because the author nails the science (typically physics). Others couldn't care less about hard science, but want to see interesting projections of the technology our grandchildren will get to play with (or be oppressed by).

In A Maze of Death, you have the subverted dumb-blonde "Susie Smart", the lying hypochondriac "Dr. Babble", and the Jerkass bully "Ignatz Thugg". In a humorous moment, Ignatz Thugg makes a snarky comment about how fitting Dr. Babble's name is without ever noticing he has a Meaningful Name himself. Mental Story: Eye in the Sky takes place in a sort of shared mental world, with the current most-dominant personality warping it to their prejudices and worldview. Same with A Maze of Death, only there is no dominant personality in that world. The fact that Jason is special is no accident. Leading pundits and politicians in Washington D.C. decided forty-five years ago to experiment with genetic engineering, producing a batch of “sixes,” that is, individuals with tremendous magnetism, physical beauty, charm and especially CHARISMA as well as superior memory and concentration. Jason is a product of such eugenics; he’s a forty-two year old six. He is so exceptional, so extraordinary, so superior, Jason thinks the way things are will never change - he will be forever young, charismatic and beautiful. Forever Jason Taverner. Nevertheless, based on this deluded confirmation bias, PKD goes on to claim that our reality is a sort of hologram overlaying a TRUE Biblical reality, in particular the time period of around 50 AD when Acts was written. The Human League utilised a character named Jason Taverner as the host of their elusive 1979 demo tape, which has since become known by fans as the Taverner Tape. Taverner introduces each of the songs and mentions that he hosts his own network TV show. Jason Taverner is on top of the world. He has it all- a house in the Swiss Alps, a beautiful girlfriend, an illustrious singing career, and a hit late-night talk show. In a sense, he is Justin Timberlake (yes, Timberlake doesn't have a talk show... yet). Until one morning he awakens to find that no one knows who he is anymore, all of his IDs are gone and, in the matter of a few hours, he has become an unperson. Which, in the militarized post-Real ID future this book is set in, makes him a very obvious and tempting target for the military police. After a confrontation with one of the women he duped and took advantage of, promising her a career in showbiz only to sleep with her a few times, he was left physically compromised and woke up in a dingy motel room with only a wad of cash on hand but with no trace of discernible legal records of proof of identity whatsoever. It's as if he's been literally deduced to non-existence.

Emotion, however, in these “Lachrimae” is remarkably restrained. Each has the same three-part format, with each part repeated. Their titles are in Latin to further maintain formality. “Lachrimae Novae” (“New Tears”) begins the process of introducing new elements, more modern harmonies with greater emphasis on dissonance and freedom of melodic line.La realidad negada regresa para atormentar. Para caer, sin previo aviso sobre la persona, y enloquecerla." Settling the Frontier: Mars in Martian Time-Slip. Alient planets in A Maze of Death. Quite often, really. He wasn't particularly popular in the United States during most of his lifetime, but he gained a following in France among the intellectual set; his bizarre works meshed nicely with the postmodern philosophy then current in French academia. To Serve Man: In short story "Fair Game", a nuclear physicist is hunted by monstrous alien beings. He assumes they want him for his scientific expertise, but actually, they wanted him for dinner.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kathy Egmont in "What The Dead Men Say" comes across as a fragile easily-duped waif. It turns out she's something very different... Brother–Sister Incest: In Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said— the policeman in question is in a sexual relationship with his twin sister.Doom as Test Prize: In the short story "The Hanging Stranger", the protagonist sees a corpse hanging from a lamppost right in the middle of town. He grows more and more confused when no one cares about this incident. It turns out everyone in the town has been killed and replaced by bee people disguised as humans, and the hanging corpse was placed there as a test to get people who haven't been replaced by bees to reveal themselves. To be blunt, the puzzle’s solution is garbage. It is complete and utter tripe. It is an obvious afterthought. It fails on every conceivable level. It is not hard science. It is not metaphorical allusion. It’s not like a guessable culprit in a mystery novel. There is no satisfaction whatsoever, neither the ‘ahhh!’ of illumination, the ‘oooh!’ of spectacle, nor the ‘hmmm’ of introspection. Instead, the book’s ontological denouement retroactively cheapens the journey readers took to get there. Hell, the character who hears the explanation does himself say, WTF are you talking about? book, stemming from the same forces which had assaulted me at the close of 1971. { PKD to Joan, 5-20-77} PKDS-4 5: I had been told that PKD's books, esp. those near the end of his writing career (which would include 'Flow...') can be abstruse and vexing, but I didn't find that to be true. I found the writing to be, by turns, engaging, elliptic, straightforward (in its own way), (sometimes menacingly) poetic, funny ("It's probably the man from upstairs. He borrows things. Weird things. Like two fifths of an onion."), teasing, of course tense, and (sometimes) even quite tender (esp. the penultimate chapter; sooo good!).
