While Sony reportedly played with a few new concepts for the PlayStation 2 controller, the company ultimately decided on something that was both familiar and subtly revolutionary. Let's begin at the beginning. The original PlayStation released in North America at the end of 1995, a time when gamers were accustomed to the SNES and the SEGA Genesis. Both machines had decent controllers, with the Super Nintendo's pad in particular a departure from the norm, sporting a D-pad, two shoulder buttons, four face buttons, and two central buttons. It's clear where Sony's initial inspiration came from, then, but it took things a step further for its very first controller. The PlayStation controller is the first gamepad released by Sony Interactive Entertainment for its PlayStation home video game console. The original version (model SCPH-1010) was released alongside the PlayStation on 3 December 1994. [1] Design [ edit ] The first major difference is the capacitive touchpad which dominates the front center of the pad. This is capable of responding to two simultaneous touches, as well as taking on various button functions (the controller remaps to use the touchpad as the Start and Select buttons when playing PlayStation Now games). PS1 — Where It All Started

Before we start, let's have a moment of recognition for a prototype PS3 pad that has become lovingly known as the Boomerang. It was a clear indication Sony was looking to make big changes, but this early design proved very unpopular online. The overall experience can be described as very smooth, with two AAA batteries being all you need to keep the controller functioning flawlessly for hours at a time. The 2.4GHz wireless technology behind the Blue Lake wireless controllers is reliable, with the controller working at distances up to 25-30 feet. Just bear in mind that you cannot use two of these wireless PS1 controllers at once, as they will cause interference with each other. Vibration is known to cause slowdown in some games. Disabling vibration in-game (if possible) is recommended if you notice this happen, or don't have a controller with vibration ability. See Setting Core Options. Before we move on to the PS4, we’ve got to talk about a controller that not only stands as one of the most short-sighted design concepts in PlayStation history but is just…strange.

The PlayStation controller's buttons were supposed to represent what actions they stood for. According to Goto, the blue cross (or X?) and the red circle stood for "yes" and "no", the triangle was for point of view, and square was similar to a piece of paper that would let players know that button was for menus. The Hotkey button enables you to press it in combination with another button to access functions such as saving, loading, and exiting in emulators. It is suggested to use the Select button as the hotkey. The following chart shows the default hotkey combinations. For example, if you chose Select as your Hotkey, that means you hold down Select while pressing the other button to execute the command.

While the PlayStation 3 "Boomerang" controller was never released, it took the world by storm with its radical design that looks like...well...a boomerang. Quit MemManager and rename your new memory card from .mcr to .srm. Following our example above, we'd now have a file called Diablo.srm. Retrieved 18 June 2020.The Sixaxis derives its name from the idea of “six axis” motion controls which were supposed to offer this controller six degrees of motion freedom. As you may know, the PlayStation 3’s motion control capabilities never really came into fruition as the few games that utilized them didn’t really work that well. Unfortunately, that’s really just the beginning of this controller’s problems. In our review of the PlayStation Move, we said it had "the potential to be the best motion control system on the current crop of consoles; but unfortunately, the games offered at the moment just don't do the technology justice." a b Hollister, Sean (7 February 2021). "How Sony designed the PS5's ultimate Easter egg". The Verge. Archived from the original on 4 October 2022 . Retrieved 8 October 2022. The controller is lightweight but feels very much like an actual PlayStation 1 controller. You’re also going to appreciate that these wireless controllers are designed to be as simple and easy to use as possible. An auto-detect feature means all you need to do is plug and play. The 2.4GHz technology offers a stable signal that should be able to keep you playing for hours. All you need are two AA batteries, and the charge should keep for a good while.
