About this deal

Pupils, parents / carers and staff at school are all important 'stakeholders' and we want everyone to have their say, to express their ideas and to keep on making our learning community a great place to be. It would be a good book to read to EYFS/KS1 as it is a funny story that can be relatable for children as they have probably also experienced having an odd sock. Simon wonders if he will ever find his perfect match and his friend Ted tries to help him find some sort of match in the form of a stripy snake. With language suitable for young children, I would recommend this from birth upwards as the colours and pitch of your voice will excite any child.

Five children from different countries show us who they love and how to say 'I love you' in their own languages. Classes are limited to a maximum of 30 children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 (like all schools), and classes in Years 3 to 6 are usually around this size, too.Simon Sock by Sue Hendra is a great book for use in EYFS and KS1 to discuss friendship and difference alongside Twinkl's PSHCE resources. With beautiful, colourful illustrations, Simon Sock will capture the imaginations of all young children.

Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! If you're looking at a wider community level, Breeze is a great way to join in activities and events across Leeds. Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet have taken a simple concept - a pair of socks - and used this to create a wonderful story about friendship with undertones of discrimination and prejudice. However, the notion of matching could also be questioned, and talk around the book could discuss the fact that people may be part of many different pairs (having multiple best friends) or enjoy their own company, too. Overall, ‘Simon Sock’ has a positive message but can also be looked at from different perspectives to think of different circumstances in which we want to be part of a pair, group or by ourselves. Ted tries to help by pairing Simon up with some other stripy things in the house: a snake, a fish, but nothing works.

This section is all about learning and how parents / carers can support or join in the learning process. An hilarious story celebrating friendship and difference from an exciting new picture book partnership. My son had plenty of questions after reading this, as the message about differences is clear enough for children to grasp and this opened a great dialogue for us about prejudice and discrimination (but in child speak). Children might also find this Repeating Patterns Worksheet or this 'Dragons Repeated Patterns' activity handy! We also have this super versatile Similarities and Differences Worksheet, too, which can be used to compare and contrast a variety of topics. The lessons are designed for use in the classroom, but are also suitable to be used at home should schools be closed again.
