About this deal

I was really hoping Bond would murder Krest. But I knew that would never happen. They best I could hope for was for Bond to punch Krest in the face. A fitting biography of Ian Fleming, creator of 007..."...Bond...James Bond...", an icon of British life, even after 60+ years since 'Dr No' first hit the bookshops. Fleming was a complex character & his own life was lived in ths shadow of his father, Major Valentine Fleming, who died in the fields of Flanders in 1917 when Ian, his second son was a mere boy. The 10 worst cars driven by James Bond: Citroën 2CV (For Your Eyes Only)". MSN. 10 November 2010. Archived from the original on 15 October 2010 . Retrieved 1 September 2011.

Bond investigates the murder of a motorcycle dispatch-rider and the theft of his top-secret documents by a motorcycle-riding assassin. The dispatch-rider was en route from SHAPE, the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, then located in Versailles, to his base, Station F, in Saint-Germain, France. Since Bond is already in Paris, his superior, M, sends him to assist in the investigation in any way he can. Bond disguises himself as a dispatch-rider and follows the same route to Station F as the previous rider. As expected, the assassin attempts to kill Bond. Bond, however, is ready and kills the assassin. He then uncovers the assassin's hidden base of operations. Bond's relationship with M is studied in "For Your Eyes Only", with Bond taking a difficult decision for M. This shows that even M has to grapple with the uncertainties related to the weight of command. It also highlights that Bond respects M as he understands that he’s trying to do his best for his country. Brady, Shirley. "Good Skate". People. Archived from the original on 20 April 2016 . FIVE SECRET OCCASIONS IN THE LIFE OF JAMES BOND

a b c John Glen. "For Your Eyes Only audio commentary". For Your Eyes Only. Vol.1 (Ultimateed.). MGM Home Entertainment. Is it possible to write effective short stories about spies? When I started reading Ian Fleming's For Your Eyes Only, I thought, "Ho, ho! I can't see where this'll work." In fact, none of the five stories are, strictly speaking, spy stories. No SMERSH, no SPECTRE, and only a couple mentions of the big bad Soviets. Indeed,” said the Governor in the polite, controlled voice that Bond prayed might relax and become human. “Why?” Quantum of Solace – The most intriguing entry as this is not really a Bond story. Bond listens to a domestic tale of betrayal and reprisal. Told in the style of W. Somerset Maugham, Fleming stretches his narrative skill.

The book, issued on the centenary of Fleming's birth in 2008, is well-illustrated & enlightens readers as to the depth of his research & the clear understanding that British pseudo-sovereignty over large parts of the world was in steep decline following the costly privations of two world wars. His brilliant answer to our flagging self-respect was to introduce a gentleman's club of characters, full of grit & determination, but fighting a losing battle against new powers, both east & west of the Greenwich meridian. Of the five stories, From A View To A Kill, For Your Eyes Only and Risico contain many of the established Bond elements. They are precisely what you’d expect to read about James Bond in short form. However, the other two are very different and quite unexpected. Samuelson, David (August 1981). "For Your Eyes Only and Its Special Effects". American Cinematographer. Part of the title of the story From a View to a Kill was used for the 1985 Bond film A View to a Kill, with none of the story used in this or any other film to date. [36] Licence to Kill (1989) [ edit ] Major Dexter Smythe is a retired British Intelligence officer living in Jamaica with a hidden past. Bond is sent to Jamaica to confront the man about what happened.

The Hildebrand Rarity – An unusual side story: Bond is not on a mission but rather finds trouble while on holiday and gets sideways of a “Hemingway hero” a boorish American tycoon with anger issues and a pretty wife. The fourth adaptation, "The Hildebrand Rarity", did not appear until six years after the comic strip versions of the other stories. It was adapted by Jim Lawrence and illustrated by Yaroslav Horak. This adaptation was reprinted by Titan Books in the early 1990s and again in 2004 as part of the Octopussy collection. Michael Lamont. "For Your Eyes Only audio commentary". For Your Eyes Only. Vol.1 (Ultimateed.). MGM Home Entertainment. a b "Another Interview With: Christopher Wood) @ Universal Exports, The Home of James Bond, 007". www.universalexports.net . Retrieved 11 June 2021. World War II again makes an appearance in the stories: in For Your Eyes Only, Von Hammerstein is a former Gestapo officer, whilst the RCMP officer, Colonel Johns, served with the British under Montgomery in the Eighth Army. [6] In "The Hildebrand Rarity", Milton Krest is of German descent, and in "Risico", both Enrico Colombo and Aristotle Kristatos fought for the British in the war. [7]Roger Moore had originally signed a three-film contract with Eon Productions, which covered his first three appearances ( Live and Let Die in 1973, The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974 and The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977). Subsequent to this, the actor negotiated contracts on a film-by-film basis starting with Moonraker in 1979. [27] Uncertainty surrounding his involvement in For Your Eyes Only, considering his age, led to other actors being considered to take over, including Lewis Collins, known in the UK for his portrayal of Bodie in The Professionals; [34] Ian Ogilvy, known for his role as Simon Templar in Return of the Saint (played by Moore in the original series); [35] Michael Billington, who previously appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me as Agent XXX's ill-fated lover Sergei Barzov, (Billington's screen test for For Your Eyes Only was one of the five occasions he auditioned for the role of Bond) [36] and Michael Jayston, who had appeared as the eponymous spy in the British TV series of Quiller [27] (Jayston eventually played Bond in a BBC Radio production of You Only Live Twice in 1985). [27] Timothy Dalton was strongly considered but Dalton declined, as he disliked the direction the series was taking at the time. [35] [37] [38] [39] [40] Also Dalton did not think the producers were seriously looking for a new 007, [37] and explained his idea of Bond was different. [41] When Moore discovered that Broccoli was screen-testing actors without his knowledge, he announced in the Daily Mail that he would not return to play Bond. [42] However, the producer convinced him to return just two weeks later. [43] Bernard Lee died of cancer on 16 January 1981, after filming began on For Your Eyes Only, but before he could film his scenes as M, the head of MI6, as he had done in the previous eleven films of the series. Out of respect, no new actor was hired to assume the role as Broccoli refused to have the character recast and, instead, the script was re-written so that the character is said to be on leave, letting Chief of Staff Bill Tanner take over the role as acting head of MI6 and briefing Bond alongside the Minister of Defence. [44] This is only the second time M has been omitted from a Bond production, the first being the 1954 TV adaptation of Casino Royale. Ironically, the original "For Your Eyes Only" short story dealt with Bond being given a personal mission by M, one of the few times in the Fleming canon that 007 did his superior a direct favour. In From a View to a Kill, James Bond finds himself at Fouquet’s in Paris, sipping an Americano. He appreciates its simplicity, considering it the least offensive of café drinks. He insists on Perrier, believing it elevates the drink. Later, at SHAPE, he is taken to the canteen for a meal and a drink. And after successfully completing his mission he asks Mary Ann to have dinner with him the following night. “Some place like Armenonville. Pink champagne and gipsy violins.”

While the short story collection disappointed many when first published, the stories work well and showcase a different side of Fleming’s writing. What we say Boshoff, Alison (22 October 1997). Friends & foes

For Your Eyes Only – Some friends of M are murdered in Jamaica and Bond is sent over to produce some frontier justice. Fleming mixes things up: on the way Bond meets an attractive and dangerous femme fatale. How could a girl have so little guts? Or was it that women could take almost anything from a man? Anything except indifference? Blast From the Past (1997) · Midsummer Night's Doom (1999) · Live at Five (1999) · The Heart of Erzulie (2001, unpublished)
