About this deal

Molly grinned, unconcerned. Burke ran a pretty loose ship and they all worked plenty of hours when they were on cases. "Guilty as charged." After completing her tours with the Marines in Iraq, Molly Sutton knew she could take down any bad guy she met. But when a family tragedy exposes the dark side of her local police, she joined up with her former CO Burke Broussard, who left New Orleans PD to set up a private investigative service for people who couldn’t find justice elsewhere.

We know quite early on who the bad guy is, but there's still a bit of mystery in regards to his full identity. Gabe did not sit down, his frown deepening to something almost dangerous. "Open to what?" he asked, each word dripping with anger and warning. When two of Eden's newest members send out a cry for help, it reaches FBI Special Agent Tom Hunter, whose friend and fellow FBI Special Agent Gideon Reynolds and his sister, Mercy, are themselves escapees of the Eden cult, targeted by the Founding Elders who want them silenced forever. The three have vowed to find the cult and bring it down, and now, they finally have a solid lead. Molly Sutton completed her time with the Marines, went to college and turned to law enforcement in her home state. When she ended up taking a very unpopular course of action, she quit and joined her former CO in his private investigation firm in New Orleans. Berkley Publishing Group and Karen Rose provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently expected to be August 2, 2022. Joy took another sip, closing her eyes. "This is the good stuff. None of that burned crap from that other coffee shop."

Karen Rose’s special seasoning is corruption and murder. Her first New Orleans novel is a winner and readers will want more.”— Criminal Element Meet Molly Sutton, hanging out on a battered but beautifully carved desk that is just right for the art deco décor in her boss’s lobby. Quarter to Midnight was no exception. I enjoyed the change in setting to New Orleans and the situation of the dirty members of the justice system from cops on up that shifted the investigation team to the private sector. Never fear, there are still good people working in the justice system and a larger team emerges, some from past books and other new quirky civilian characters particularly Brousseau’s capable investigation team and his network in the city, to go after the corruption even if it puts them on the hit list. I liked seeing how modern private investigators work their jobs and seeing tough, competent Molly in action.

Miss Sutton," he began, trying for a kind smile. "I'm not sure you're the right person for this job." For decades, Eden has remained hidden in the remote wilds of the Pacific Northwest, “Pastor” keeping his cult's followers in thrall for his personal profit and sexual pleasures. But the Founding Elders are splintering, and Pastor's surrogate son DJ is scheming to make it all his own. Gabe released a harsh breath. "Okay." He sat, then shifted his gaze to Molly, who still stood in the doorway, having not moved a muscle. He did a double take. "Do I know . . ." He trailed off. "Right. Last night. Happy birthday, Miss Sutton." Now he wasn't telling Patty because he didn't want to put her in danger, because danger was coming their way. It already had, leaving at least one body in its wake.
