About this deal

Selenium can interact with certain medications, and some medications can have an adverse effect on selenium levels. One example is provided below. Individuals taking this and other medications on a regular basis should discuss their selenium status with their health care providers. Cisplatin

Berr C, Balansard B, Arnaud J, Roussel AM, Alpérovitch A. Cognitive decline is associated with systemic oxidative stress: the EVA study. Etude du Vieillissement Artériel. J Am Geriatr Soc 2000;48:1285-91. [ PubMed abstract] This indicates that selenium may help lower heart disease risk by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in your body. Oxidative stress and inflammation have been linked to atherosclerosis, or the buildup of plaque in arteries.

This review article identified three complete reports of RCTs of selenium treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. The number of participants included in the trials ranged from 40–70 and the trials lasted from three to six months. The active treatment in all trials was selenium capsules (200 μg per day in two trials and 256 μg per day in one trial). The control group in all trials was made up of participants on placebo capsules. Several clinical trials have examined whether selenium supplementation reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. In one randomized, placebo-controlled study, for example, 474 healthy adults age 60 to 74 years with a mean baseline plasma selenium concentration of 9.12 mcg/dL were supplemented with 100, 200, or 300 mcg selenium per day or placebo for 6 months [ 48]. The supplements lowered levels of total plasma cholesterol and non–high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) plasma cholesterol (total cholesterol levels minus HDL levels) compared with the placebo group, whereas the 300 mcg/day dose significantly increased HDL levels. Other trials have provided evidence that selenium supplementation (200 mcg/day) or supplementation with a multivitamin/mineral pill containing selenium (100 mcg/day) does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease or cardiac death [ 49-51]. A review of trials of selenium-only supplementation for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease found no statistically significant effects of selenium on fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events [ 52]. Almost all of the subjects in these clinical trials were well-nourished male adults in the United States. In an analysis of 25 observational studies, a 50% increase in blood selenium levels was associated with a 24% reduction in the risk of heart disease ( 11). González-Domínguez, R., García-Barrera, T., & Gómez-Ariza, J. L. (2014). Homeostasis of metals in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Biometals : an international journal on the role of metal ions in biology, biochemistry, and medicine , 27 (3), 539–549. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10534-014-9728-5 Vitamin C is an antioxidant required in tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, and healthy gums. It protects our bodies against the harmful effects of pollution, it prevents protects against infection, and enhances immunity. This powerful antioxidant also boosts the production of collagen (connective tissue that help repair tendons and blood vessels), and helps flush the muscles of lactic acid- the cause of your dreaded DOMs. Where can vitamin C be found? The number of people with Alzheimer’s disease is growing. Thus, finding ways to prevent this degenerative disease is imperative. The federal government's 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans notes that "Because foods provide an array of nutrients and other components that have benefits for health, nutritional needs should be met primarily through foods. ... In some cases, fortified foods and dietary supplements are useful when it is not possible otherwise to meet needs for one or more nutrients (e.g., during specific life stages such as pregnancy)." Selenium is a trace mineral and antioxidant, which helps fight free radicals caused by toxins like herbicides, cigarette smoke, and radiation that can lead to cancer and heart disease. Your body needs only a small amount of selenium to make certain enzymes and it is important for overall good health. In proteins, selenium is combined to form antioxidant enzymes and selenoproteins. Where can selenium be found? This powerful mineral helps protect the thyroid against oxidative damage and plays an essential role in the production of thyroid hormones. It’s important to note that this effect was only associated with selenium obtained through foods, not supplements. Selenium concentration is higher in the thyroid gland than in any other organ in the body, and, like iodine, selenium has important functions in thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism.
