How to migrate a vers1.3 theme to vers1.4

Postby TWDesign » Thu Jun 24, 2010 9:31 am

From scratch would seem to be the answer :(

I have a fresh install of vers 1.4 and want to take a theme i developed on another site for vers 1.3 and use it.

However, on closer inspection it seems impossible because the theming directory and file structure
is completely different.

For example in vers 1.3 the contents of /app/design/frontend/default/default/

/layout
/locale
/template

In vers 1.4

/etc
/locale

contents in vers 1.3 of /skin/frontend/default/default/

/css
/images
/js

in vers 1.4

/css
/images

And thats just scratching the surface because the contents of each of those directories is vastly different too.
The Css directory for example was in vers 1.3

/boxes.css
/clears.css
/ie7minus.css
/iestyles.css
/menu.css
/print.css
/resets.css

in vers 1.4

/print.css
/styles-ie.css
/styles.css

Am I missing something here or has the Magento team basically flipped the bird at the principle of
backwards compatibility? :?

Do I need to recreate the theme from the beginning?

You can try and upgrade but yeah best bet would be to reimplement

probably turn out to be less work anyway, you have all the HTML, CSS and images you need, just need to put them in the right places again.

The issue with using old themes on new versions is you often miss out on new stuff because your old theme doesn't implement it.
