About this deal

You may also find that you are being bitten and are at your wit’s end. This can happen especially if your pet is near the sofa or sleeps near your bed. So to fully remove fleas in your home, you need to be armed with a vacuum cleaner and some of the products below. Remove all pets but ensure pet bedding is treated as this is a primary hiding place for pre-adult fleas. In simple terms, you have to be patient. Maybe not what you want to hear if you’re being bitten every night, but patience is key to eradicating the issue. The reason you keep doing this is that as well as helping you rid your home of carcasses, vacuuming also creates vibrations that cause fleas to emerge from their pupa making them vulnerable to the spray.

Note: While we’re on the subject of toxicity, we’d like to talk about topical flea medications for a moment. Topical flea meds containing high dosages of permethrin are hazardous and potentially fatal to cats. Never give a cat a flea medication formulated for dogs. Some flea sprays also contain permethrin, although the concentration is usually much lower. If you use permethrin spray, read the label to make sure it’s safe for the type of pet you have. Versatility Getting a new animal medicine to market is a very expensive process. Products need to be approved via rigorous European and UK standards, meeting safety, quality and efficacy requirements. It can take anything from 5 – 11 years to get to market. Fleas spend very little time on your pets. The rest of the time is spent hopping and crawling on surfaces such as your carpet and pet beds. So prior to using flea spray in the house, make sure you wash all pet bedding at 60 degrees Celsius or more. Tetramethrin– a synthetic insecticide used for the control of indoor pests and is used in Staykil and R.I P Fleas Extra.

Indorex should be sprayed around your home evenly. Spray directly on to any carpets, flooring and skirting boards and under rugs and blankets However these sprays are designed in a way that they will bind to the surfaces they are sprayed on in a way that it will not come off onto the skin. This ensures they are safe for cats and other pets once they have been applied, but make sure you read and follow the instructions carefully. Nylar: This growth regulator is an insecticide that also goes by the name pyriproxyfen. It prevents flea eggs from hatching and hatchlings from developing.

When your pet has fleas, treating them with dog or cat flea treatment isn’t enough. Eggs and larvae will still be found on soft surfaces such as their bed, your carpets and sofa, and in the car if you take them on trips. But they can fall off your pet pretty much anywhere they have been. Finally, make sure you treat your pet at the same time, ideally with an oral flea treatment and a spot on. Pyriproxyfen –this is another insect growth regulator that affects flea egg hatching and development. It prevents the fleas from multiplying.

Key considerations

Some people who use essential oil-based spray have observed staining on their white-coated pets. This is often the result of exposure to cedar oil, a yellowish essential oil found in some natural sprays. Letting your pet into all rooms in the house as the presence of a host will encourage fleas to hatch out. Remember that fleas are not too fussy about where they get their meals so if pets are not around, emerging fleas will happily jump onto humans and bite them instead! Once you’ve treated your home you will need to vacuum frequently for a few weeks and make sure you empty the vacuum immediately, away from the house.

When you are facing quite a serious infestation and the only way forward is to spray the entire room from top to bottom, a flea fogger may be the best option so you’re not standing manually spraying for ages. A 5-second burst should cover approximately one square metre. If you spray more than this it can cause discolouration, any less and it will not be effective. However, fleas can also thrive in winter inside your home, as you will be using central heating and blankets to create a warm environment for yourself. Unfortunately, fleas also thrive in the warmth.I'm honestly at my wits end with this- the fleas seem to be resistant to everything. I've got laminate wood flooring and mopped it and flea sprayed it and still, fleas everywhere. I've been using these products thinking there was just some user error (maybe I wasn't thorough enough etc.) before resolving to stop beating myself up and get something else. It's just so expensive though to keep buying these useless things only to have to throw them away and buy a different thing. Thinking of getting the council in for this one now. Nightmare. Because fleas can’t be killed in their pupae life stage, they must become adults before the treatment will work on them. This can take anywhere from a few days to months, so while most products will still work for up to 12 months, you may need to reapply regularly and simply wait. However, you should see a definite improvement within a week or so. When should I use flea repellants in the home? Did you know that only 5% of fleas are actually on your pet at any one time? The other 95% are on soft furnishings, just jumping onto your pet temporarily to feed. Fleas will also only die if they bite your pet and ingest the product in their blood but can live for up to two weeks without a meal. Eggs and larvae can also only be killed by home sprays and foggers. This one contains 15 grams of Permethrin, which is a very high dose compared to other options on the market. Flea bomb usage should not be taken lightly as it can rule the use of your room out for a really long time, and this CritterKill was previously only for professional controlled use – so you know it is strong stuff. Without getting rid of the eggs, larvae and pupae, your pet will never be free. Did you know that a female flea can lay up to 50 eggs every single day? With a lifespan of three months, that is a lot of kids.

It contains Margosa, Citronella, Eucalyptus and Peppermint. These all have their own job and can repel fleas as they don’t like the smells, so is a bit more humane. And did you know that research shows they can stay as pupae for up to one year? So even if you think they’ve gone, for now, they can easily pop up again given the right conditions.

Features

A. It depends on the type of furniture you have and the spray you’re using. As always, we advise you to read the bottle’s fine print. For example, the fine print might tell you the spray is suitable for water-safe fabrics only. This wording implies that the spray would stain a leather couch, since leather is not water safe. Flea sprays are either made with synthetic chemicals or natural ingredients. Chemical-based sprays may give you pause if you’re using them on your pets or around your children. However, natural sprays may be more expensive and less effective. If you’re using a chemical-based spray, read its ingredients closely to see what it’s made with. Some chemicals, including imidacloprid, fipronil, permethrin, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen, are known to cause health problems for animals. Versatility If you are worried about these issues, opt for a treatment that doesn’t contain the ingredient, but when used safely and following strict guidelines, it shouldn’t have a negative effect on animals. Always air a room fully after application. Natural vs Synthetic flea treatments – which is best? Permethrin is an ingredient found in a lot of the above insecticides. It is a synthetic pyrethroid that acts as a neurotoxin on insects. The pupal window is the key to clearing your home of fleas. Fleas are vulnerable to sprays and other treatments in their egg, larval and adult phases. However, in their pupal phase, none of these treatments will affect them, and they can remain like this for many months.
