About this deal

The tub becomes a metaphor for the intrusion of disability; a trip hazard in the middle of an unsuitable room, slowly deflating and in constant danger of falling apart. It is a locked-room thriller in which the protagonist is tasked with solving a string of murders taking place in the hotel while on a trip to celebrate her brother’s engagement. Though I haven’t read the other nominees yet, the passages below are proof that this would be a deserving Barbellion Prize winner.

I didn’t always understand every allusion or reference, but I finished the book with renewed gratitude for my own life and a feeling that, if ever I were to meet Abi Palmer I would like and respect her unreservedly.

She deftly captures a relationship with her body and its multitudinous ailments and malfunctions, in which it too wrong-foots her, not always reacting as she expects, for good or ill, and quietly (because she doesn't have the energy for more) exasperating her far more than those involved with her appreciate in their own annoyance. Sometimes books or lyrics are described as "honest" and I have never really known what that means, but this book is honest. By the time tyres are thrown over their heads like oversized necklaces, and the smell of petrol wafts so strong that some in the crowd cover their noses, madness has staked its claim on what is left of the day.

And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. Stacy Willingham’s masterful use of dual timelines adds intrigue and atmosphere to this compelling mystery, while her immersive writing draws readers into our protagonist’s increasingly unstable state of mind. Don't miss The Retreat, the addictive new thriller from the global bestselling author of The Sanatorium. Almost as if women telling their stories of pain and disability in this format isn't real enough for those categories. Moving between past and present, ALL THE DANGEROUS THINGS delves into the darkest corners of the life of one mother as she investigates the disappearance of her son one year prior—and, in the process, confronts long-buried secrets from her own childhood.

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. BLOOD SISTERS will be published in September, but thanks to Vanessa and her publisher, we’re able to get an exclusive early glimpse into the book right here in today’s blog post! Brian McAuley’s CURSE OF THE REAPER is a thriller tailor-made for, as his dedication so aptly puts it, the “Halloween people. But smashing that with ultra-violent torture scenes carried out by a gas mask-wearing villain can sometimes be jarring.
