About this deal

The colour of your front door is one of the ways in which you can make a statement about your home. It's the first thing guests see as they enter your house so the door colour you choose should make a good first impression. It’s important that your door is free from any dirt, grime, grease or mildew, so give it a good clean with some warm soapy water. If this isn’t done, the door will be resting solely on the latch, which has the potential to result in long-term problems, such as ‘warping or ‘swelling’. Applying the Polytrol to a wet surface will not produce the desired effect and could negatively impact the door.

If the paint you're using needs a primer then you'll apply this layer first. You'll then add one or two coats of paint to the door. A second coat can often make the job look more even and professional. If you’ve been affected in this way, take a look at our top tips – they might provide you with a simple solution to the issue! Warping, bowing or swellingSubstances like Polytrol are deep-penetrating oils which rejuvenate the door’s original pigments, thus restoring its colour. Polytrol can be applied with a brush or cloth, just like polish. I think you're right, JeepersCreepers, prep is everything - it took longer than painting! I also recommend a decent brush. I also think you're right in that it may be one of those regular jobs - oh well! Hopefully it'll do me for a few years.

If you do decide to paint your door it means that you'll increase the amount of maintenance that's needed. This is because you'll need to re-paint it over the course of its lifespan which is time-consuming and expensive. The paints, sealants, and treatments that are used on traditional wooden doors often contain toxins that are harmful to the environment. Over time, they're washed off by rainwater and can seep into the water table. This contributes to land and water pollution.Martin Lewis: What the Autumn Statement means for you – including wages, benefits, pensions, ISAs, national insurance and more

Make sure that you handle the door with care for the next two or three weeks, as the paint can still be sensitive to bumps and scratches. Want an updated design, as well as a new colour? It can make the entrance to your house look tired and in need of repair. This way, not only can you change the colour of your door, but also update to a new style and design of door for your house. If the door is particularly dirty you might want to consider using a cleaning product such as Owatrol Net-Trol. Or for the removal of mildew you may want to use something such as a 50:50 bleach and water solution.

If you want to bring the whole look of your house together, we highly recommend painting your window frames in the same colour as your door. Once the paint is applied, you'll need to add a layer of beeswax or another product to protect the paint. This will also give it an attractive finish.Once you have cleaned and prepared the door and the primer has dried, it is time to apply your chosen door colour. That includes removing any dirt from the surface of the door, cleaning around the frame, and even finishing the windows with a glass cleaner. Once you have finished using Polytrol, clean any brushes or other tools you may have used with white spirit. Cloths can be left flat to airdry before discarding. This will help to make sure you remove all dirt, grime, oil and any other residue that may make it harder for the paint to adhere to the surface.
