About this deal

Mixing castor and mineral oil therefore seemed a good idea in the early 1900s, but the two are not readily miscible. What Wakefield researchers discovered was that a surprisingly small proportion of castor oil — as little as 0.7 per cent — was sufficient to confer its high film strength on the mix, and thus Wakefield Motor Oil (Castrol Brand) was born. In fact, five variants were introduced initially for different applications, Castrol R being the flagship product intended for aero and racing engines. Wakefield & Co’s core business was — and in the immediate future, would remain — lubricants for the railways and industrial customers, but it was Castrol Brand that was to carry the company name to the four corners of the globe. The brand has been involved in Formula One for many years, supplying to a number of teams, including McLaren (1979–1980 and 2017), Williams (1997–2005), Team Lotus (1992–1993), Brabham (1983–1984), Jaguar (2000–2004), Renault/ Alpine (2017–present) and Walter Wolf Racing. In October 1909, Britain’s first aviation prize, the Inauguration Cup, was won by Frenchman Leon Delagrange using Castrol oil. Following which, on land and in the air, the litany of Castrol successes encompasses many of the most significant events in aviation and motoring history, including Britain’s winning of the Schneider Trophy three times in a row with the R J Mitchell designed, Rolls-Royce powered Supermarine S5, and most of the World Land Speed Records established during the highly competitive inter-war years. In the Great War, Castrol R even came to the attention of Kaiser Wilhelm II, achieving almost ‘secret weapon’ status when it was discovered that a captured British aircraft could operate at considerably higher altitudes than German equivalents due to its engine oil’s superior low temperature performance. If you’re driving a muscle car or a European import, the manufacturer may well specify a full synthetic engine oil. Alternatively if you’re driving an older domestic vehicle, the manufacturer may recommend a mineral oil. However, even though that’s the most economical option, a full synthetic will almost certainly look after your engine better. Knowing the best engine oil to use at every oil change is essential. Toyota Motorsport had Castrol sponsorship in the World Rally Championship from 1993 to 1999, and Hyundai Motorsport did so from 2000 to 2002. Also, the Honda factory team at the World Touring Car Championship had Castrol sponsorship from 2012 to 2020. [10] When it’s time for an oil change, knowing the best engine oil to use is essential. The answer to that question gets more complex every day. The latest engines are getting smaller and more powerful all the time, and manufacturers are specifying complex full synthetic motor oils to cope with higher engine pressures and meet fuel efficiency targets. In early 20th century, Wakefield Co. developed lubricants especially suited for automobiles and aeroplanes. [3] The brand "Castrol" originated after researchers added measured amounts of castor oil (a vegetable oil derived from castor beans) to their lubricant formulations. [1] If you had an old bike with an ordinary four-stroke engine and someone told you it would run better if you only half filled it with oil you'd think they were nuts. Cutting down on the oil in premix is exactly the same thing and just as foolish. It can be used in racing engines, in gearboxes, as a two-stroke mix, even added to normal four-stroke engines and is made from the crushed seeds of the castor plant – a plant largely native to Africa and India. Castrol was the main sponsor of the Castrol International Rally in Canberra for 11 years between 1976 and 1986. The same was true for an International Rally held in South Africa, ending annually in neighbouring Swaziland. The "Wakefield Oil Company" was founded by Charles Wakefield in Cheapside, London in 1899.
