About this deal

Excellent book. Quite possibly the best boxing book around, certainly in the top 5. It certainly helps that the topic is so interesting - the best era in boxing bar none. To determine the rank of each pugilist and edge our opinion into the discussion, the total score of each pugilist tells you how we see the list from best to worst out of the fabulous four. The other element I was impressed with was the detail and the stories told around each fight. It really gives an insight as to what it was like for each of the mega fights, but without overloading you with needless information. The first 10/10 attribute in this rank goes to Bleacher Report’s fifth-best defensive fighter in the sport’s history. Leonard had everything in this department, foot feints, timing, punch awareness. years after the group who captivated the sporting world laced up their gloves, the debate still goes on about who the best out of the fabulous four.

Kimball also explores the contributions of Emanuel Steward, who worked with Thomas Hearns. By carefully compiling tidbits from Steward, Kimball helps assess who among the four fighters had the greatest talent. The book's exploration of Hearns' pre-fight dramas and camp preparations adds depth to the discussion of his legacy and contribution to boxing.

The book can be difficult to read at points, as Kimball tries to shoehorn in loads of information that doesn't always seem particularly relevant. He regularly has sentences that span five or six lines and have more commas than vowels. Also, he builds suspense in some chapters by not telling you who's won the fight until you've read a blow-by-blow account. But in other chapters you'll learn the outcome of the fight in the first couple of lines, which is a bit bizarre.

If you can’t watch live, AT&T TV also comes with 20 hours of Cloud DVR storage (with the ability to upgrade to unlimited hours). Whitecross and his producer Fiona Neilson have come up with a masterpiece, aptly named The Kings, which audiences will rave about for years. Offering a straight up rake on the kings, it provides a historic account of what took place and how this era enfolded. In boxing, it is said that styles make fights. From 1980 through 1989, it was the style of four great fighters that not only made legendary fights, it ushered in a boxing renaissance. The fierce rivalry between world champions and future Hall of Famers known as the “Four Kings”– Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns, and Sugar Ray Leonard – produced a Golden Age defined by the nine world championship fights between them and solidified their place among the greatest to ever live. For unsurpassed brilliance, blood-tingling thrills and skills and enough pathos to empty a box of tissues, those glorious battles will still be talked and argued about 100 years from now. The Kings’ is not accessible on Netflix as of now. However, we recommend our readers watch ‘ Counterpunch‘ or ‘ FightWorld.’ Is The Kings on Hulu?

Hall of Fame boxers Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran are the subject of Showtime’s newest documentary, “The Kings.” The four-part series premieres Sunday, June 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Following a brief fallow period in the wake of Ali’s retirement, boxing was revitalized when Leonard became a world champion in 1979 and waged his first battle with Durán in 1980. From that point, the Four Kings engaged in a decade-long run of riveting fights that far outperformed any other sport in attention and revenue. They were the most popular stars of sports and American culture. Hearns was skinny, worked hard, and was grateful to be able to participate at out-of-town trips Kronk Recreation Center's Emmanuel Stewart arranged for. Leonard, who among boxers was described as having "choirboy"-looks really sang in a church choir before he started boxing.

When you discuss a showman though, no boxer is as flashy as Leonard. This attitude is a theory of what spurred Duran on to utter the words ‘No Mas’ as ‘Sugar’ would taunt even the most respectable of opponents. Not to mention, winning a gold medal for his country gave him the status of a golden child in the American media. Four Kingswill examine the notorious rivalry between British boxing legends Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno. A flawless and singular account of fights that remain potent and important decades after the final bell' - Irish Times Lennox Lewis added: “It is pretty special to have been on this journey through the 80s and 90s, and a privilege to share the story with Frank, Nigel & Chris on screen. Whilst we had our own lanes, our own processes and experiences, we had the combined desire to get to the top and we achieved that, in the process we made history as the first ones to do it for Britain and the rest have followed. Everybody knows what happened in the fights, but they didn’t see what led up to the fight, the rivalries were real, we all wanted to outdo each other, I’m excited that this series will give the public a chance to see behind the curtain.” The early 1980s marked the beginning of an uncertain era in the boxing world. One of the legends of the sports, Muhammed Ali, retired, and it was time for someones else to step up. Four young men – Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns embrace the opportunity and begin climbing the ladder of success in the boxing world to be crowned as the new king. Their dream comes true, and the boxing world finds not one but “The Four Kings.”

Fast forward three decades, the show delves deep into the enduring rivalries of Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, as well as Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno. Through a compelling blend of archival footage showcasing their electrifying clashes that mesmerized global audiences, and exclusive interviews offering poignant insights into their personal struggles with mental health beyond the spotlight, Four Kingsrevisits a pivotal era in British sports history. The four-party documentary examines the four fighters’ different and dynamic fighting styles, their ascent to the top of the sport, and their legendary matches. Very rarely is a non-fiction book so riveting it's almost impossible to put down but this is one of those books' - ***** Reader review
