Now, a posthumous novel THE ABOMINABLES is being released with artwork by Fiona Robinson. Robinson's illustrations are a great match for Ibbotson's words and really express the good-natured silliness of the yetis that star in this cross-country adventure. THE ABOMINABLES was completed by Ibbotson's son and editor, but there is no noticeable difference from Ibbotson's usual voice. If that is what you are thinking – you are correct. It is nonsensical. Of course, one of the huge problems with this entire novel is that it is written with perfect hindsight. All the contemporary characters are blessed with impossible foresight, as though they were fashioned by a 21st century author. They use a new type of rope, wear new-style crampons on their feet, have modern ice axes in their hands. They know that Adolf Hitler and the Nazis are a threat to the whole world, long before they actually become a threat to the whole world.At this point in the book--so very early on--all I could think was "White Man's Burden" which is not a theme I want to find in a book published in 2013. Simmons presents a vivid, crisp vision of the treacherous climb in the novel, but the true protagonist is Everest: "divine and not of this world," whose steep vertical slopes wreaked by bone-chilling winds, cloudy shrouds, mists and myths would slowly relinquish her deadly mysteries to yet another team- who, in their eagerness to conquer her majesty- might be too ill-equipped to handle her perils. The characters were a bit too bland. The surrounding plot was ok, but the interactions were just ordinary. That said, for those who don’t like hot drinks, or who can’t eat chocolate/wheat/etc, then you might consider it too much money or too much risk to pay for items you can’t use. It’s nice, then, that the Bare Bones option exists for those who just want to be surprised every month with some new items for the library. Bromley is lost and presumed dead. But these proto-Nazis – exhibiting the tenacity that made them the bane of a certain Dr. Indiana Jones – are after Deacon, J.C., and Smith, on the off-chance that they might discover Bromley’s body, and the secret it contains.

Being a fan of supernatural fiction, my only tiny peeve was the misleading advertising of this tale as supernatural. I haven't read any Simmons' novels before but I understand he has the imagination and the creativity to successfully explore a mythical theme; he instead chose to use the abominable metaphor for a different kind of monster- that to me was a little patronizing. I did have fun looking up some of the history on mountaineering and learning about the gear they used. The writing is skillful, precise, and frequently funny, and it offers an effective counterbalance to some of the story’s more serious social criticism..."The novel is full of whimsy, charm, and sly humor. The yetis will tug at readers’ heartstrings and make them laugh. The writing is lean, witty, and subtle. Ibbotson manages to touch on ethical messages of human rights, advocacy, and environmentalism without being obvious."
