About this deal

My biggest pet peeve about the ME Super isn’t its manual mode limitations, rather the lack of an auto-exposure lock, since its meter usually favours highlights.

I found the having to take it down from my eye to check aperture a bit frustrating, and the shutter speed buttons seem a bit fiddly and gimmicky looking back on it (Pentax wanted to look "modern"? As for scanning, there are a lot of options, but for my purposes (posting here) I just have my photo lab do it for me. That’s what we intended to find out when, yearning for a break from over-saturation in needlessly-complicated cameras, we decided to head for the beach, alone, with the ME. One of the reasons that the K1000 is probably worth more is due to its simple ‘no frills’ style, reliability and the fact that you can still use it without a light meter. The build quality is very good, and the camera is very light, but it feels very solid and like it could take a bit of rough treatment. This web page will go into the 5 best lenses for the Pentax ME Super, plus a handful of alternative lenses.

i found the shutter buttons a bit fiddly, and the combined iso/exposure comp dial meant you couldn't dial in +/- at the iso extremes. I wanted a Pentax body to use with my then 4 (now 6) Pentax m lenses so went looking for a suitable slr camera. It’s hard for me to be objective about the Pentax ME Super because I’ve used and loved its predecessor, the Pentax ME, for years.I wanted to clean it but I was a bit discouraged after reading somewhere that only tech service can change the focusing screen of a Super PROGRAM/A. When removed it was actually quite gooey, easy to replace but was tricky removing it and not getting any tiny bits on the focus screen. An ME Super was my last SLR before going mostly digital and I do like it mostly, but aperture-priority has never really worked for me. Note; these product shots are small, I started this review in 2010, and 800 pixel wide images were pretty common back then.

I have been shooting with Pentax 35mm SLRs for a long time and there are numerous reasons why they are my favorite 35mm SLRs. I forgot to mention that mine is one of the limited series "European camera of the year" that were supposedly made in 1983 to celebrate the victory of this award, it's like a normal Super A with a sticker on the front, a special cap for the lens and a nice strap. While it’s not going to make a dent in a Nikon F, its metal construction inside and out results in a camera that’s dense and solid.

Now I'm using the K-5 which somewhat comes close to the Super A, but still, I miss my bright and large viewfinder that the Super A had.

The LED indicators for the shutter speeds are really bright and easy to see, even in strong daylight, and manually going through them is a breeze, although this might take a while to get used to for those who are used to lots of dials on their cameras rather than buttons. Also it increases the maximum shutter speed to 1/2000th of a second, which is good for bright environment shooting with fast prime lenses. It’s a camera that stays out of the way while enabling the shooter to make fantastic images all the same. Mental note: Next time you test lenses, spring for the high-res scans so you might be able to actually see the differences).
