About this deal

The size of the objective lens is most critical to the quality of the image you see through your binoculars. The larger the lens, the greater its light-gathering ability. Too small and the image will be murky and dim; too big, though, and the binoculars will be too bulky and heavy to be practical. Fujinon 10x50 FMT-SX (these are too heavy, too bulky, too slippery, and they have same issue as the 6x30s with rounded prism housings on the bottom, which give poor thumb support, plus at 10x, you really need a good grip to turn those tight diopters).

As with many binocular brands, the BDII-XD series feature ED (Extra low dispersion) glass to improve optical performance, but the story does not end there. ED glass is manufactured in a variety of quality grades. Every BDII-XD model features Kowa’s environmentally friendly, legendary XD objective lenses. This high resolution ED glass contains large amounts of the mineral fluorite crystal - the best material available today for light transmission ensuring an image with edge to edge sharpness and virtually zero chromatic aberration (colour blur). Kowa lens coating technology developed over decades, further enhance the light transmission properties of all lenses and Kowa’s unique KR coating repels dirt and fluid. Enjoy sharp images with natural colour, high contrast and incredible detail, from dawn through to dusk. The standard magnification. It brings images close enough to see clearly but not so close that shaky hands are an issue. Hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and even birders are being targeted by these lightweight ‘take anywhere’ green-bodied roof prism binoculars, which are under half the price of the other Kowa option here. Despite this, they don’t stint on features found in physically larger alternatives. The Nikon Prostaff P3 binoculars are entry-level and we were really impressed when reviewing them. Nikon has saved on manufacturing costs where it counts, mainly in the accessories that these binoculars ship with, but has retained the high-quality optics that I expect to see in a Nikon product. Even the best-behaved and older kids can easily drop objects and damage them unintentionally! Unfortunately, it’s unavoidable concerning kids’ toys.

Weighing just 228 grams, these binoculars are super lightweight and won’t weigh your bag down. This is important if you’re planning on holding the binoculars for extended periods or if you want to take them hiking, because you don’t want to wind up with sore arms. Magnification My take on this? I'm in the low-power camp. I don't find the visual difference between 7× and 10× all that great, but I'm noticeably less fatigued when using low-power glasses. If you get the chance, give both a good try and see which you prefer. The exit pupils are the little disks of light you see floating behind the eyepieces. Dual focus would be a major improvement for those birders that have to rely on specs to enjoy birding in adverse weather. With the lightweight construction of the CL Companion binoculars and the impeccable build quality, you can be sure your investment will withstand the test of time, which is what you would expect as these are far from cheap. But I say you get what you pay for and the optical quality of these binoculars is possibly the best on the market.

That being said, for daytime use a lens size with a diameter of 21 to 25mm is arguably ideal. You’ll probably also notice the term ‘roof prism’ mentioned as part of the specification of the smaller binoculars we’re showcasing here. Binoculars are best when they’re comfortable, so the Steiner Safari comes with soft, silicone eyecups which are comfortable against the skin. The compact size also makes this option suited to watching sports, going hiking, traveling, and other common pursuits. Naturally, we get fully multi-coated optics with Bak-4 prisms to improve light transmission, plus a degree of waterproofing; and all at an affordable price for those of us seeking a compact pair for everyday use. A large, ridged central focus knob and dioptric adjustment aid ease of use and rapidity of focusing. Binoculars: what we look for If you’re mostly going to be stargazing or mounting your binoculars to a tripod, you can get away with larger lenses. 7×50 and 10×50 pairs are popular for moon exploration and constellation-hopping, while 12×60, 15×70 and 20×80 pairs will take you even deeper into the night sky, although they start getting too heavy for realistic handheld use.
