About this deal

The best pillow really depends on what position you sleep in and what you want when you sleep on a pillow. Our range includes light-as-air goose down pillows, supportive memory foam pillows, and even a full-body pillow that supports tired bodies during pregnancy, or pre and post-surgery. Confusingly many manufacturers 'invent' their own terminology to dress things up to sound a bit more fancy, but the basic synthetic options are hollowfibre, microfibre, and memory foam. Dust mites and other allergens can also accumulate in pillows if you neglect to wash and replace your pillows regularly. One study from the University of Manchester found that the average pillow that has been used for more than 18 months contains at least a million fungal spores. Another appealing feature is the amount of choice you get when it comes to size and feel. It’s available in soft, soft/medium and medium/firm variants, as well as standard (50 x 75cm), superking (50 x 90cm) and square (65 x 65cm) sizes. Although there are affordable pillows to be found, investing in the best pillows on the market doesn't usually come cheap. But, if you're after a better night's sleep, then we think it really is one area of your sleep set-up where it pays to spend a little more.

It’s a little bit firmer than the Otty Deluxe, but it’s not so firm that it feels clinical, instead landing somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. It comes with an inbuilt protector, plus a soft, breathable and hypoallergenic bamboo cover (which can be washed at 40°C), which helps you to keep things fresher than washing your pillowcase alone .It also has a slimmer profile so it won’t feel too high, though we found that it does fit pillowcases a bit awkwardly. Still, it held up to our pressure tests and it comes in small, medium and large sizes to properly fit different body types. We also confirmed the outer cover is removable and can be machine washed. This down alternative pillow stands out for its temperature-regulating cover that's made with Outlast viscose which stores and releases body heat to prevent you from overheating while you sleep. Unlike other cooling pillows that feel initially cool to the touch, we found that this one works all night long to help keep you at a comfortable temperature. A lot of pillows describe themselves as cloud-like but this one justifies it better than most, being extremely light and really quite lofty – more of a cumulus than a stratus. If most pillows are too flat for you, this could be the one you’re looking for. It offers a lot of support, not through being solid but for the sheer amount of light, springy filling.

If you have a single or double bed, choose a standard-size pillow. If you have a king or super-king bed, you may want to consider a super-king pillow. Square pillows are typically used for decoration. Standard– the ‘regular’ pillow size that you’ll typically see in most homes, hotels and B&Bs. A standard pillow measures 50cm x 75cm / 20" x 30" and is ideal for single, double and king size beds. The position you sleep in will largely determine the type of pillow you need to keep your spine aligned nicely straight.

Down alternative pillowscan still feel soft and offer good support, but they're usually made with synthetic fill so they're more affordable than down. Not too firm and not too plush, this pillow has Talalay latex on the inside surrounded by Purple's signature elastic grid material, which is super popular for its ability to feel equally soft and supportive. It also comes in three heights to fit a range of body types and combination sleepers.

Another issue I encountered with testing other down pillows is a strong, musty smell that lingers long after first use. That didn’t apply to this one. I also noted that there is no sign of the feathers or down poking out through the tightly-woven cover. It’s hard not to wax lyrical about this pillow, which is the plumpest and most comfortable down I’ve ever slept on. It’s made from 90 per cent ethically sourced Hungarian goose down and 10 per cent feathers (scan the QR code on your pillow for a fully traceable guide to the manufacturer). For this test we worked our way through a constant rotation of new pillows, looking for those that helped us sleep better. The first thing we learned is that material is a key factor. Broadly speaking, there are five types that you need to know about: washable cotton, luxurious down, memory foam for support, modern microfibre and hybrids of two or more of those. See the FAQ at the bottom of this article for a full explanation of the pros and cons of each. There are a few different pillow sizes available which can make choosing the right pillow feel confusing. Here’s a brief run-down of the pillow sizes available:UK based Aeyla has developed quite a clever concept here: a pillow within a pillow. The main reason is that the plumpness actually lasts. The filling is a vegan down-alternative made from microfibre. It’s encased in a cooling cotton cover.

There’s a whole world of pillow fillings out there, so we’ve summarised the pros and cons of the various types below. This Emma Premium Microfibre Pillow is soft - but that’s not to say it also doesn’t suit side sleepers, who are traditionally better suited to firmer pillows. With so much height, I found wherever I lay, I still felt the support of the double layered cushioning inside, and importantly my head stayed aligned with my body. Similar to the Woolroom pillow above, I actually found it too high on arrival. You can remove filling from the Hypnia too, but it’s not quite as easy to separate the whisps of hollowfibre as it is to remove the wool from the Woolroom or the nanocubes from the Simba Hybrid. Body type: Larger-framed people should use a taller pillow, whereas smaller bodies need something flatter. Medium frames can use something in between. Then there are the more traditional, natural fillings to consider. These range from all types of feathers and down to wool filling.Natural pillows are those which have a natural fill such as wool, silk or feather & down. Natural fill pillows are breathable, helping prevent overheating while you sleep. Many natural fills, such as wool and silk are hypoallergenic or naturally antibacterial so they deter allergens such as dust mites or bacteria from your pillow. Lexie Sachs is the executive director of the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, where she oversees testing to find the best bedding, including pillows. Lexie has been analyzing pillow data since she joined Good Housekeeping in 2013 and reviewed hundreds of pillow test scores before making these recommendations. She is often featured as a pillow expert for TV and other media segments. This keeps your spine in the best alignment it can be in this position. Ideally, try not to have a pillow under your head but if you need one, make sure it's asoft pillow. Keeping your head as low as possible will help to align your spine correctly.
