About this deal

The manual sensibly warns against attempting to use this second port for anything other than the editor.

I was pleasantly surprised to note that MPE glide between keys arrived at the correct pitch regardless of the selected scale. Notionally the Joué has space for three modules at once, if they are a standard square shape (9cm on a side), but some modules are double- or triple-width. Yes, I checked and there are effectively 4 horizontal strips and 12+ vertical strips that record aftertouch, based on the dimensions of the matrix pad.The soundpack contains 10 presets, ranging from guitar-with-effects patches to traditional instruments (Cymbalum, Koto), and Workstation allows effects processing to be tweaked according to taste. Bring unique expressiveness to your music creation and access a new dimension of sound design with the compact and modular MPE MIDI controller. I think I might make a separate thread for ongoing discussion of development, if nothing else to keep me sane while I grok a new skillset.

Each one has play and record buttons for the app as well as octave up and down buttons for quickly extending the range of notes available. This reduces the dynamic range of aftertouch for single notes but allows each key to be sensitive, up to around 4 notes in the same horizontal zone (as the player adapts to this reduced range). What is even more annoying is pressing hard will completely blow out the other notes aftertouch data, so with each note, you have to press lighter and lighter to not blow out their output. The X and Y outputs can be configured to output in high-resolution (14-bit) mode, though in practice the resolution available seemed to be around 9 or 10 bits. Vibrato response seemed a little temperamental, needing a bit of left-right movement before kicking in, but glissando and glide worked well enough when configured properly. This means single notes will have a lot of dynamic range, and you can modify your playing to play across all 4 horizontal zones to avoid collisions. Enable the MPE mode within the Joué Editor and you'll be able to modulate all your MIDI parameters simultaneously. Whether it's a music creation console in a child's classroom or an ultra-expressive MIDI controller in a producer's studio, the J-Play adapts to every style. Usefully, the actions you perform on the effects are recorded as part of the clips in the Joué app as automation, which makes it easy to spice up your loops and make them more intriguing. The Joué application identifies the board and pad immediately, and shows installed packs and projects, including a selection of how-to examples, like Massive Attack’s Tear Drop or Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy.

You play each board according to its design, so the most conventional is the piano, closely followed by drums, then keys and guitar. The app allows you to easily trigger and layer sounds but, of course, the instrument works with any MIDI-capable software. I dont mind whether your solution is python or javascript or something else, but I would probably like to run it on a rasperry pi eventually, as part of a permanent small solution that doesnt need to use my main computers. Pressure-sensitive, MPE-capable, configurable multi-touch MIDI controllers seem to be like buses: you wait ages then two come along (almost) at once. And another one which I use with synths that dont support MPE but do support polyphonic aftertouch messages - this version still takes MPE from the Joue, but converts to single channel midi, monitors the active notes on each channel and turns CC74 from each channel into per-note polyphonic aftertouch, and uses ‘most recently pressed note’ to choose which pitch bend message to retain.
