It’s difficult to overstate the size of the gap of knowledge, passion and priorities that exists between 99% of the spirits-drinking population who consume rum and the 1% of drinkers who would qualify as the hardcore rum geeks. Always the alchemist, Plantation has created a “dark” rum by blending their 10-15 year aged Jamaican rum together with 1-3 year aged Barbadian twin column and pot still rum. A superb-looking decanter bottle of XO rum from Barbados, aged in bourbon barrels before being shipped to France for a secondary maturation in Cognac casks from the Ferrand house. Plantation is also owner of the mythical West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and is a shareholder of National Rum of Jamaica, owner of Clarendon Distillery and Long Pond Distillery. On the palate this 5 year rum old has plenty of sweetness to it, but no real distinguishing flavour to speak of, so it just comes across as rather bland.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary is an aged Caribbean molasses rum produced from Barbadian pot and column still rums blended and aged in Barbados for 10-12 years in casks formerly used for American whiskey. There’s some tropical elements, including passionfruit and pear, but also a nuttiness and hints of cocoa, oak and resin.
