About this deal

There's a wide price range among USB mics and we've done our best to test models across the entire spectrum. Spending more doesn't necessarily mean you get a better product, but there does seem to be a fairly sensible scale of quality that comes with price. Then, ignoring any instructions in the manufacturer's guide to select " stereo mix", simply press the Record button on Transport Toolbar. USB 3.2 (Only used on Type C connections and later): Between 5Gbps and 20Gbps, depending on the version. Some manufacturers recommend USB hard drives with external power supplies but our tests have shown that Verbatim 2.5” external HDDs that take power from the USB plug, function on 98% manufacturers’ TVs without any problems. In the exceptional case that the power from the USB port on the TV is not sufficient, an external HDD with power supply always works. Manufacturers typically allow 1:1 recording, meaning that you will see no loss in picture quality. They were popular for a time, but have seen a sharp decline in the number available over the past ten years or so. With PVRs and on-demand content so popular you'll likely struggle to find a new model to buy, and we don't test them, either. Pros:

The HDD will be formatted in a proprietary format. Next to this, the HDD will be linked to this particular TV. You therefore cannot record a TV programme on one TV, disconnect the HDD and try to watch the programme on another TV or on a computer. We could talk in circles here, but a USB mic for music recording should probably have only minimal DSP, if any. Although some models employ DSP, it is really subtle in these scenarios compared with that of a typical gaming mic. And there are plenty of music mics that use no DSP whatsoever. MSI Immerse GV60 Once the external drive is ready to go, you should be able to record with the touch of a single button or even set recordings right from the TV’s EPG (electronic program guide). With all that out of the way, let's break down the discussion into the three most typical uses for a USB mic and the various options, characteristics, and needs for each application.

An aerial is required to watch Freeview Play for live TV as received through an aerial, as it is with standard Freeview. Only the on-demand and catch-up features require an internet connection. According to Freeview, you’ll need a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps. Freesat and IPTV

Once you have connected your external USB hard drive to the USB recording port of your TV you can move on to initializing the USB HDD with the TV. Then you're probably more suited to streaming-only entertainment, so you may want to consider the best streaming devicesinstead. They're easy to use, cheap and perfect for instant entertainment. Outside of the USB mic world, there are several styles of microphone (such as condenser, dynamic, or ribbon) that, combined with the various microphone polar patterns (such as cardioid, hypercardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-eight), produce a wide range of options for the recording engineer. Among USB mics, it's mostly (but not always) condenser mics with cardioid patterns. Best of all, recording television is free. You are not tethered to subscriptions service, where you lose access to your favourite shows once the billing stops. Can you record on a smart TV? Basically, most USB mics take care of the mic pre and analog-to-digital conversion steps in the chain, which makes the signal chain simpler. As mentioned, standalone gear typically handles those processes in pro studio settings.

Finally, most USB mics are plug-and-play ready. Apple GarageBand, for instance, typically recognizes a USB mic immediately and asks if you want to use it as an input (set it for both input and output if you want to use it as a headphone monitor as well). But not all recording software plays nice with USB mics. Perhaps most surprisingly, Avid Pro Tools, which is more or less the industry standard for music recording software, requires a somewhat tedious workaround to support most USB mics. (You can search for "aggregate device USB mic Pro Tools" to get a better handle on that.) PVRs allow you to record multiple programs at once - in some cases as many as seven - while watching something else. For the average TV user who is recording HD films and TV shows, you'll want at least 128GB. Stay mindful of what you've recorded and regularly delete older content though. We can't say exactly how many hours of TV will be stored as this all depends on the resolution it's being saved at. Sometimes your TV will let you choose whether to record at a high or medium resolution to save space. As always, with the different TV brands and models, your milage will vary.

If you want to mix with a pure signal or learn how to process audio on your own, this mic is an excellent value (especially since it's often available for far less than its list price). Just keep in mind that you might need to buy a pop filter and a better stand for the best results. If you have just made a recording it is strongly recommended that you immediately export your audio using File > Export > Export Audio to WAV or AIFF (ideally to an external drive) as a safety copy before you start editing the project. A USB external HDD: both 2.5” and 3.5” can be used, however in practice you will find that 2.5” HDD are preferred because of their low power and silent characteristics. The main advantage of having a DVR/PVR is that it will have one or two built-in Freeview tuners, so you can record one programme while watching another. Most also support “series link”, so you can elect to record every edition of Dr Who or whatever, rather than “taping” each one separately. Also, most work as DNLA servers, and can stream programmes to other DNLA-compatible Blu-ray players and TV sets over your home network. Another consideration is how many people will be speaking simultaneously. If it's only one person talking in the room, a cardioid pattern mic is probably the best route. It might be worth considering a mic that has a figure-eight pattern if there's a one-on-one interview happening—placing the mic in the middle of the two speakers in this scenario (provided they are not far away from each other) can yield a natural recording. The best audio interface for most beginners and intermediates is the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd gen)

In this example on Windows, the output is set to the named speakers of the built-in computer sound device, the input is set to the USB turntable (usually called or including the phrase "USB Audio CODEC") and recording channels are set to stereo. Windows 10/8/7 calls most USB external devices "microphones". Some higher-end USB recording interfaces may appear as their explicit manufacturer's name. The goal with any mic is almost always clarity. But for podcasts, we need to take the vocalist into account. If you are recording an experienced speaker who has excellent mic technique, you might want to go for a USB mic that has no DSP. If, on the other hand, the podcast routinely calls for less experienced interviewees, you might wish to use a mic that has some protective DSP like in the aforementioned gaming mics, so that outbursts of laughter or sudden rises in level don't immediately cause distortion. It may very well be the case that you own a USB Recording enabled TV without actually being aware of this function, simply because to date there has not been much focus on this feature from the TV manufacturer’s perspective.

Digital TV channels: USB Recording is only enabled on digital TV channels – not on analog channels. You can record SD, HD and 3D. Please note: Only European TVs have USB recording. US models have the feature disabled due to legal issues. Before we dive into the world of USB mics, you should know how most professional microphones work. In a typical recording studio scenario, a microphone is an analog piece of gear that sends a signal to a console or computer through an XLR cable (often through a mixer that can handle multiple microphones at once). The signal from the mic should be more or less pure; EQ, dynamic compression, and reverb are all later steps in production. Some connect to the internet giving you access to catch-up and streaming apps, such as iPlayer and Netflix. Consider how much TV you actually want to record and store. Some viewers prefer to record entire seasons of their favourite show and then binge-watch the lot in one go. Others record and then catch up on their show soon after it's been broadcast. For those who like to store several entire series at once, buy the largest storage capacity your budget will allow. Consider the read speed Some gaming mics up the ante by providing multiple polar patterns. Although cardioid (single-direction) is the standard, maybe you want to capture more than one voice with an omnidirectional or figure-eight pattern. Some gaming mics also have built-in switches to work with specific consoles. Again, don't base your decision entirely on pricing and buy the most expensive thing. Determine what you need first and see what options meet your criteria.
