About this deal

But she sees Stuart lurking around, a mysterious person starts dropping clues on fan boards about her secrets. It was a story about Elinore, a woman who was murdered and whose skeleton was scattered all over England. Plenty of people got obsessed with Masquerade and the imitations that followed in its wake, and there was a scandal around the solution to the puzzle. The result would be widespread and perpetual conflict across the world, and a tragic new chapter of suffering in human history. The Whalebone Theatre is a grand story, sensitively told; Quinn is surely capable of so much more, if she can only bring herself to break a few more bones on her stage.

Erin Kelly sketches two families intertwined in every possible way and thru different POVs and different timelines, bringing about a story that is all about secrets and power games. The mystery of the missing golden bone is really secondary, and to be honest, for most of the book I wasn’t at all interested in its whereabouts. However, this is definitely a character-driven novel with a focus on the many, mostly bad, decisions these characters have made throughout the years.

A passing witch casted a spell allowing Tam to resurrect Elinore if he could piece her skeleton back together to prove his love. Clues and puzzles in the pages of The Golden Bones led readers to seven sites where jewels were buried.

The original armchair treasure hunt is the 1979 million-seller Masquerade, by Gloucestershire artist Kit Williams. The Golden Bones by Frank Churcher was published fifty years ago as a simple fairy tale and treasure map. Part picture book, part treasure hunt, Sir Frank Churcher created a fairy story about Elinore, a murdered woman whose skeleton was scattered all over England. That her parents named her after the dead woman in their famous story and never even thought that it might inspire the crazies is just the tip of a very ugly iceberg of parents behaving very badly indeed. Incredibly compelling family-secrets story, with the premise of a book like Masquerade by Kit Williams that made it's creator's family rich, and also targets. Where Worsley excels is in her descriptions of Christie’s day-to-day life; we hear virtually nothing of her political opinions as she lives through two world wars, for example, but we do glean a sense of her exceptionalism in the news that she consistently ignored air-raid sirens and simply turned over in bed.
