About this deal

The House demonstrated its capacity for innovation as well as its strong commitment to terroir – one that has never wavered through the centuries – by setting up its wine presses directly in the vineyards, an innovation symbolising its commitment to quality that continues to this day. Thus in 1840, when the company acquired its first parcels situated in Verzenay, a wine press was built and installed at the same time, which is still in use today. From the royal tables of European leaders to space exploration, the iconic red sash that adorns the Mumm champagne bottles symbolises remarkable expertise and the never-ending quest for innovation, which perpetuates the House’s emblematic motto: “Only the best”. In 1964, René Lalou, the head of the Mumm Champagne House, and Léonard Foujita (1886–1968), a Japanese painter belonging to the École de Paris school of art, decided to build a chapel in the gardens belonging to the Champagne house. Begun in 1965, the Foujita chapel was entirely designed by Foujita in the romanesque style, who drew the plans and designed the ironwork, stained glass and sculptures. He supervised the building and interior decoration.

The robe’s golden-yellow hue, enlivened by a delicate stream of fine bubbles, extends a sparkling invitation to take a first sip. The French confiscated all of the Mumm's property, although they had lived in Champagne for almost a century before World War I, because they had never become French citizens. It is a relationship that has been nurtured over the years, as evidenced by the bottles produced by Mumm in the 19th century, personalised for leading restaurants and hotels. Even at that time, Mumm’s champagnes were regularly mentioned in publications featuring the views of leading arbiters of taste, which included the menus of receptions attended by society’s crème de la crème. The brand also maintained excellent relationships with the period’s prominent professional gourmet associations. Discover all the secrets of champagne in a journey through the intimate setting of Mumm’s cellars in Reims. The result of 70 years’ work, dug into the Reims chalk subsoil, the cellars are home to all of Mumm’s champagnes, from the newest additions to the oldest creations that mark the history of the House. Protected from light and heat, it is in this 25 km labyrinth of underground tunnels that the champagnes and still wines develop, a treasure trove carefully watched over by the House’s Cellar Master… In the early years of the 19th century, Peter Arnold Mumm’s three sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, recognised the sales potential of the outstanding sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France. As Germany and France enjoyed good relations at the time, the Mumm brothers made the bold decision to establish a new branch of the family company in the Champagne region, creating a branch office in Reims with the assistance of a local representative, G.Heuser.

Through their delicately fruity flavors, Mumm Le Rosé and Mumm Grand Cordon Rosé represent the Cellar Master’s art of blending and the House’s desire to create new tasting experiences. When all of these factors are combined to produce an exceptional vintage, the Cellar Master may decide to compose their blend exclusively from wines of the same vintage. The final blends are then placed in the cellar for a minimum of three years to fully express their aromas. These remarkable vintages will leave their mark on the history of the Mumm Champagne House. Each bottle of Mumm Brut Rosé reveals a genuine work of art: the rose that embellishes the cap covering the top of its cork, signed by the Japanese painter Léonard Foujita, who eventually made his home in France. In 1875, he decided to decorate each of his bottles with the prizedCordon Rougeor red sash of the Légion d'Honneur, the highest French civilian distinction, created by Napoleon I. Over and above the symbol of excellence that it represents, the Cordon Rouge embodies the true spirit that drives the House: the quest for perfection, a spirit of adventure and panache. With a legacy of almost two centuries behind it - the House of G.H. MUMM, established in 1827, still aspires to the original aims of the great Georges Hermann Mumm, one of the father figures of the House. His passion was to achieve the highest possible quality for G.H. MUMM champagnes: time after time he was heard to say "Only the Best".

Inspired by the initial adventure of the company’s founding fathers, Georges Hermann Mumm tirelessly travelled the globe, across Europe and as far away as Australia and New Zealand to market his champagnes. Already at the turn of the twentieth century, the company counted some twenty subsidiaries in the world’s main markets, including the United States, Russia and Canada, but also Brazil and Peru. Georges Hermann Mumm’s greatest creation was certainly the famous “Cordon Rouge”, first released in 1875. Only the best.” Georges Hermann Mumm’s motto could certainly also be that of the greatest chefs of today and yesterday. This shared mindset goes a long way to explaining the strength of the bond uniting Mumm’s champagnes and haute cuisine. Nearly two centuries after it was established, Georges Hermann Mumm’s vision continues to steer the House’s philosophy and the production of outstanding champagnes. This is reflected in Mumm’s strong attachment to the vineyards, respect for traditional expertise, and an innovative spirit, which guarantees the excellence of its wines. This vision defines the unique style of Mumm champagnes.
