About this deal

Thanks to its auto-evaporative functionality, the air conditioner recycles condensation water to cool itself. There’s rarely a need to drain it unless you live in an extremely humid area. If you want to lower the temperature in the room by more than a few degrees then you need an air conditioner; similarly, if your room is large, then an air cooler probably won’t work very well. The digital control is really clear and easy to use, with three modes - air conditioning, fan and dehumidifier. You can select the fan speed and choose to have maximum or medium power or to make the unit silent.

Sadly, the unit doesn’t really allow you to open the window as advertised — unless you rip off all the insulation foam. At least you can still enjoy the view through the window. Key specs – BTU rating: 7,000; Functions: AC, dehumidifier, fan; Energy rating: A; Max noise: 65dB; Extra features: Remote control, timer, two-speed fan; Hose length: 1.8m; Dimensions: 348 x 335 x 740mm; Weight: 21kg In our testing, it reduced a medium-sized room from 25C to 21C in about 90 minutes, which isn't bad, but also isn't as fast as some of the other options on this list. Despite being small in size, it’s fairly powerful and instantaneously spread air across the living room. Although the exhaust hose isn’t aesthetically pleasing, it does make for a powerful air conditioner and its energy efficiency makes it a great choice for continual use during summer.

I am looking for a portable air conditioner, which will be vented through the wall and I have used various BTU calculators that suggest 5000 BTU. Adding 10% for the direction of the bedroom gives 5500 BTU, so 6000 BTU but these are few and far between, so I am looking at 7000 BTU.

In all, we're fans of this air conditioner: it works how it should and, if you can stomach the price, you won't be disappointed. Leading brands like AEG, De'Longhi and LG are all well-known for delivering excellent cooling results and have serious authority in the appliance world. The range of modes provides a lot of versatility and is one of its best features; the dehumidifying mode was ideal for drying clothes, while the fan instantly cooled down a room when the temperature got warm.

This reduces noise by running the compressor and fan more slowly. Often, the target temperature will increase automatically across the night so you don't wake up freezing cold.

Now, 1 mini split with 1 air handler (single-zone) won’t work, since you have 3 stories and a lot of rooms. Ideally, you should use 1 air handler per 1-3 rooms. In your case, it would make sense to get a 4-zone or 5-zone mini split (these units consist of 1 outdoor unit and 4 or 5 indoor air handlers). Let’s say you are using five 12,000 BTU indoor air handlers (for a total cooling output of 60,000 BTU or 5 tons). You would put 1 air handler on the 3rd story, 2 in the 2nd story, and 2 in the 1st story. This is how you think about adequately providing both cooling output as well as much-needed airflow and output distribution. We find a lot of customers get these units for bedrooms,” says Appliance Direct’s Jake Crossley. “7,000 BTUs is the output we would recommend for rooms up to 18 square metres. Any larger and you won’t get the full benefit.” Multiply the dimensions (in feet) of the room by five. So for a room measuring 15ft x 10ft x 8ft, you would calculate 15 x 10 x 8 x 5 = an air conditioner of 6,000 BTUs.Now, this didn't work in every window; the hose couldn't reach the tilt-only windows in the flat we tested it in, so it had to go out of the French windows on the balcony. It is a 137 square foot bedroom with 8 foot ceilings. There is also an additional raised platform space that is about 4 feet high from the platform to the ceiling and is 135 inches wide and 27 inches deep. This mode sets the air conditioner to full blast and drops the temperature in a hot room within minutes.

The LG unit blows so much cool air that I had no problem keeping a 450-square-foot room chilled, even when running the air conditioner on the energy-saving mode. Inverter compressors are also quiet, but Midea U doubles down on silence with its U-shaped design. This form factor allows the window pane to slide down between the AC and compressor compartments, acting as a sound barrier. Advanced scheduling - Set the air conditioner to automatically run at different temperatures at different times of the day.Of course, you don’t want to go much bigger than you have to. Weight, size and convenience matter, and if a unit’s too big, too heavy and too difficult to set up, then you may end up avoiding using it except for a few really hot days in the summer. You need to balance the cooling power you need against how big and obtrusive a PAC can be before you’re not prepared to put up with it. Where can I put a portable air conditioner? However, to get a perfectly-sized air conditioner with just right enough cooling power and no energy overspending, you should consider some additional factors. These are: Like the other air conditioners on this list, it requires a flexible hose to be placed out of a window or sliding door, so you'll want outside access in whatever room you put it in. Air coolers use cold water or ice to cool the air, but air conditioners use cooling gas; both use fans to spread the air around the room. If you want to be really specific, you can work out how many BTUs (British Thermal Units) your air conditioner requires to cool your office or room. There are handy calculators that can help you work this out online — we found one at www.aircondirect.co.uk. Do you need to clean your air conditioner?
