It comes with a small board game (on the back cover there is a small package glued to the inside) that I have not opened yet, but they do give you instructions on how to play it in the book, as well as a reference to the game inside the story itself. It tells of old rivalries and a conspiracy that Lee has to fight and although we already know the ending to this story, it is very fast-paced and thrilling. A stunning Limited Signed edition in unread Very Fine condition, never taken out of its original shrink wrap.This short tale is signature Pullman, and reminded me a lot of Northern Lights, my favorite of his trilogy, in the sense of adventure and wonderful atmosphere. It follows the coming of age of two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they wander through a series of parallel universes. The book ends with Lee remarking that he was amazed to learn Hester is a hare, to which she replies, "I always knew I had more class than a rabbit. on the front flap, 7-9 Prat Street on the rear flap, but without the ugly (and obviously later) Carnegie Medal sticker on front of the dustwrapper), signed by the author on the title page.

Whether that was influenced by my already existing love of the characters, I don't know - but the story was gripping from start to finish. When I turned the last page of this story, it was such a bittersweet moment, knowing what is to come.This time around, Scoresby seemed a bit brash and more quick-witted than I remembered but he was 30 something years younger so that might have something to do with it. The story reveals the origins of Scoresby's friendship with Iorek Byrnison as well as Scoresby's aeronautical career. So it is that Lee (and his daemon Hester) arrive in the town of Novy Odense and become involved in a stand-off between a put-upon sailor named van Berda and the power of corporate privilege.
