Sitting above the Canon EOS 100D is the EOS 700D, which has a very similar specification, but a larger body, which may also suit some photographers. The image quality provided by the 18-million-pixel sensor is good, without being exceptional. Colours are excellent, and in good light at low sensitivities the camera performs well, though it suffers a little more than I would have hoped at higher ISO settings. Image quality lived up to our high expectations. We love the colour output of EOS cameras, and with well-chosen automatic settings and extremely low noise at fast ISO speeds, it’s hard to get anything but great results from this camera. Generally, the sensor captures a good amount of detail, though as we’ve noted numerous times with Canon cameras, there can be quite a big difference between the detail that can be resolved in raw files and that which is present in JPEGs produced in-camera. A slight tweak to the local contrast and sharpening settings really brings out the finer details in images, which can otherwise be lost in JPEGs. Aside from the smaller handgrip and fixed screen at the rear, it's pretty much DSLR business as usual when it comes to the 100D's control layout; with the caveat that it feels like nothing extraneous or fussy has been included. OK, it's still not quite as small as the likes of the brand's own compact Canon EOS M (again with APS-C sensor) if you truly want a camera with close to DSLR quality but none of the bulk. But, if you're considering your first ever DSLR, the Canon EOS 100D is an ideal place to start.

The Live View button is within easy reach of your right thumb. Using this button it is easy to enter Live View, but it takes a surprising amount of time for the camera to actually display the live image (think several seconds). A grid line display and very useful live histogram can be enabled to help with composition and exposure, and you can zoom in by up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Alternatively there is a vast range of mirrorless cameras available, which are worth looking at if small size is of a priority, including the Sony NEX-3N / NEX-5R, Panasonic Lumix GF6 / G6, Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 / E-PM2, and Samsung NX300 to name a few. However, if you have an investment in Canon lenses, want as small a body as possible, and prefer an optical viewfinder, then the Canon EOS 100D delivers excellent images, is well built with good handling, despite the small size. For many having a true DSLR that is as small as possible will appeal, and the Canon EOS 100D certainly doesn’t disappoint, although there are a few negatives due to the small size, namely the shorter battery life, slower continuous shooting (compared to the 650D/ 700D), and slightly fewer features and buttons. We would also recommend trying the camera in person, as you may prefer a bigger camera, if you have larger hands. Overall, the build quality of Canon EOS 100D DSLR camera can be said to be very good as it is sturdy and robust despite boasting a compact body. In other words, you can take comfort in the fact that this Cano DSLR camera can withstand harsher punishment as well as being less prone in getting damaged easily. In addition, the rubberized elements around this Canon camera make it feels right on your hands. In fact, you will feel comfortable when holding it.
