Last year’s Mercury - Act 1 was all about reclaiming a discernible sound. Frontman Dan Reynolds’ personal trauma shifted to the foreground in an attempt to ring some emotion out of a band that’d been coasting for half a decade. More often than not, however, it was overwrought, a mechanical affectation that seemed unnatural for the band.
