About this deal

There are three reasons I did not sell Hadrian’s Wall after playing Twilight Inscription. I managed to get a picture of all twenty four Factions in Twilight Inscription – they would never be this close together without a war breaking out in Twilight Imperium. Much like how Twilight Imperium is a massive board game, Twilight Inscription is a massive roll-and-write. Where most roll-and-writes have each player filling out a single board (referred to as a “player sheet”) as they play, Twilight Inscription has you filling out four! There are a lot of things to spend resources on across all four sheets, and figuring out the best place to do so is part of the core strategy in Twilight Inscription. Maybe you want to discover new systems or race to Mecatol Rex on Navigation; perhaps you’d rather develop some planets on Expansion; you could always generate commodities to amass your wealth on Industry; or maybe you just want to build up your fleet on Warfare. You’ll gradually gain victory points no matter which sheet you invest in, but take care not to neglect any of them; otherwise, unexpected events could throw you off your game! Second, the interaction from the Warfare and Council events are not very deep. The Warfare event is just like 7 Wonders—compare the strength of your armada to your neighbor’s strength and determine the winner. I wish it had more depth like being to eliminate your opponent’s ships if you drew a certain formation or special abilities on the Faction sheets. As for the Council phase, you simply spend votes on the outcome you want to have happen. There is no trading. I suppose you could promise to not do something on Warfare in exchange for votes, but that would be the extent of your ability to negotiate. Again, I wish these events were more robust.

Much like how Twilight Imperium is a massive board game, Twilight Inscription is a massive roll-and-write. Where most roll-and-writes have each player filling out a single board (referred to as a “player sheet”) as they play, Twilight Inscription has you filling out four! This epic roll-and-write game for one to eight players offers an experience unlike anything FFG has done before. With a limited pool of resources at your disposal, you’ll need to carefully manage Navigation, Expansion, Industry, and Warfare as you amass victory points and earn your right to the throne on Mecatol Rex. Will your faction become the new rulers of the galaxy? Or will your fledgling empire fade into obscurity? Anything can happen in this strategic, infinitely-replayable game! Inscription is a very different game from Imperiumbut shares a core of strategic, enticing gameplay that provides ample experimentation and replay room for established gamers. Inscription relies less on in person interaction too, which may be a blessing to the less outgoing amongst us. In my games so far, I’ve seen players take different approaches, and I’ve seen multiple strategy paths win the game; though by this I mostly mean that I’ve seen different specializations win the game. In the end, you will need to do at least a little bit on all of the sheets at some point. Many of the sheets provide bonuses on aspects of other sheets, and this is an extra incentive to get these combos marked off on your sheets.

The Takeaway

So that doesn’t cover all the little details of the sheets, but it’s enough to get a gist of what each does.

Additionally, each player will get four different sheets to write on – Navigation, Expansion, Industry and Warfare. They are recommended to be arranged so that the titles of each sheet meet in the center of the player area – but in the end, you can put them however you want. Note that these sheets are double sided; the B side offers an identical layout while the A sides are different. As you play the game, you will try to gain Assets – things in circles. Things in dotted circles must be used immediately when gained. Things in dashed circles can be gained and then used later when the player wants to spend those things. Each player will get a chalk marker to use on their sheets. Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Twilight Inscription, a brand-new game in the Twilight Imperium universe!
